The University of Evansville men's basketball team plays a pair of 20-game winners and league leaders this week. The Aces (14-11, 8-7) host 21-5 Wichita State Tuesday, then step out of conference play at Murray State Saturday in the Sears BracketBusters. The Racers are 20-6, in first place in the Ohio Valley Conference at 12-3, and winners of eight straight.
All fans who bring three canned food items to the Roberts Stadium box office near Gate 2 will receive a $13 ticket for just $8. The canned food drive benefits the Tri-State Food Bank.
•A victory Tuesday would assure the Aces of their first .500 conference record since the 2000-01 team finished 9-9. An Evansville victory Tuesday paired with a Drake defeat at Missouri State would assure the Aces of a top six finish and a spot in the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference quarterfinals on Friday, March 4. The seventh through 10th place finishers must play in the March 3 opening round.
•The Aces take an 11-2 homecourt record into Tuesday's game. Only North Carolina and Creighton have come away from Roberts Stadium victorious this season. The .846 winning percentage is the best at home for the Aces since the 1994-95 team ended up 12-2. Wichita State is the only MVC team that Evansville has beaten at Roberts Stadium three years in a row.
•Wichita State has been the MVC leader for all but a few days. The Shockers pounded the Aces 91-57 in the MVC opener for both teams Dec. 29 at Wichita. The 91 points were the most scored against the Aces this season, and the 34-point loss was the biggest of the season for UE. Evansville hasn’t allowed more than 75 points to any other league opponent.
•Freshman Jordan Jahr suffered a concussion Saturday at Bradley, and may have to sit out the Wichita State game. Teammate Kenneth Harris missed the Missouri State game Feb. 2 with a concussion. He is the only player so far who’s been forced to sit out a game this season. However, you can also add walk-on Andy Chinn to the list. He suffered a fractured jaw in practice Sunday, and will miss the rest of the season.
•Here’s a list of the Aces who rank in the MVC top five statistically: Pieter van Tongeren is #1 in FG% (.650); Colt Ryan is #2 in FT% (.867), #3 in scoring (14.7), #3 in steals (1.3) and #5 in 3-pointers per game (2.0); Kavon Lacey is #3 in assist-to-turnover ratio (+2.0); Kenneth Harris is #5 in rebounding (6.5).
•Tuesday’s game is the next-to-last for the men at Roberts Stadium. The finale is Feb. 26 against Illinois State. The UE men and women will play at the new downtown arena in 2011-12.
