LUBBOCK, Texas – The University of Evansville softball team split in day one of the Masked Rider Invitational, taking an 11-2 win from Alcorn State before falling 8-0 to No. 19 Texas Tech. (As ranked by NFCA/USA Today).
Evansville’s offense exploded for 17 total hits while only striking out four times over the two games.
The Aces (2-12) will return to the field tomorrow for a doubleheader, taking on Alcorn State at 11:00 CST before facing Texas Tech at 1:00 CST.
Game 1: Evansville 11, Alcorn State 2 (6 innings)
The Aces’ second win of the season came in the form of an 11-2 run-rule in the first game of the day.
Senior Jen Stahlhut tripled to left field in the first inning to break open the game with a 3-0 lead for the Aces. The hit brought home freshman Katie Sears and sophomore Tamara Robey before an error in the outfield allowed Stahlhut to make the complete trip around the bases to score the third run. Alcorn State ended the inning with five errors in the field, one of which allowed sophomore Alicia Betancur to cross the plate, giving UE a 4-0 lead going into the top of the second inning.
Stahlhut came through again in the second inning, belting a single to left field to score Sears, who had led off the inning with a single of her own.
Two more UE runners scored in the bottom of the third inning. Senior Kelci Alsip made it from second to home off a single up the middle from sophomore Halie Malone. Freshman Kacey Rogers picked up her third RBI of the season to bring home Malone with a double to left field.
Junior Ashleigh Rahming delivered a pinch-hit single to plate Betancur in the fourth inning. Betancur was able to score again in the sixth thanks to a two-run home run by junior Amy Gaertner, her first of the season.
Sophomore Kendall Kautz (1-2) tabbed her first win of the season on the mound, allowing just two hits and hurling four strikeouts in four innings of work. Freshman Taylor Perry pitched two innings of scoreless relief to close the game.
Game 2: Evansville 0, No. 19 Texas Tech 8 (5 innings)
A powerful Texas Tech lineup was able to used seven total hits and three home runs in the first two innings to jump out to an early 8-0 lead over the Aces. The Red Raiders received a three-hit shutout performance from pitcher Kelsey Dennis to secure the win.
Betancur, Rogers and freshman Niki Rahming each tallied a hit in the loss. Freshman Emily Morris (1-5) was credited with the loss in the circle.
