CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. --The University of Evansville softball team split a midweek doubleheader with Southeast Missouri State today at the Southeast Softball Complex in Cape Girardeau, Mo.

UE notched its second eighth inning win of the season with a 4-2 victory in game one of the doubleheader. SEMO was able to pull away with a 9-0 win over the Aces in the nightcap.

The Aces (6-18) will return to action this weekend as they host Northern Iowa for a three-game Missouri Valley Conference series.

Game 1: UE 4, SEMO 2 (8 innings)

Junior Amy Gaertner blasted her third home run of the season to give UE the extra-inning win over the Redhawks in game one of the double header.

Evansville was able to put up the first run of the game in the fifth inning as senior Kelci Alsip scored on senior Jen Stahlhut’s second double of the game.

SEMO used a two-run home run to take  a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning and give UE just three more outs to stay alive in the top of the seventh. Freshman Taylor Perry delivered a pinch single to represent the tying run on the bases before junior Maggie Little knocked a pinch-hit double to the left field wall to bring in the run and even the score at 2-all.

In the top of the eighth inning, Stahlhut was placed on second base according to international-tiebreaker rules. Sophomore Tamara Robey moved Stahlhut to third with a sacrifice-bunt before Gaertner cranked a long fly ball over the left field fence to give UE the 4-2 lead.

Freshman Emily Morris improved to 2-5 on the mound, closing out the game in relief of sophomore starter Kendall Kautz. In her tenth start of the season, Kautz scattered six hits over 5.2 innings of work while picking up five strikeouts in the circle.

Stahlhut finished game one 3-for-4 at the plate with two doubles and a RBI.

Game 2: UE 0, SEMO 9 (DH)

The Redhawks used a four-hit first inning to jump out to an early 3-0 lead to start game two of the doubleheader. SEMO was able to tack on six more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to bring the score to 9-0.

Freshman Taylor Perry (0-2) took the loss on the mound. Perry also tallied Evansville’s only hit of the game with a two-out single in the top of the second inning.
