EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The Northern Iowa Panthers posted two wins over the University of Evansville softball team to secure the series sweep today at James and Dorothy Cooper Stadium. UNI took game one by a final score of 8-0 before the Aces lost a 3-2 heartbreaker in game two of the doubleheader.
The Aces (6-21, 1-5) will return to action Wednesday as they host a nonconference doubleheader with Murray State.
Game 1: UE 0, UNI 8
The Panthers managed eight runs off 10 hits in the first game of the doubleheader to post the shut-out win over the Aces.
Freshman Taylor Perry (0-3) was credited with the loss in the circle, throwing all seven innings in the loss. Perry fanned a season-high six batters while allowing four earned runs.
Sophomore Niki Rahming led the Aces’ offense, going 2-for-3 at the plate. Senior Jen Stahlhut and junior Amy Gaertner each added a hit to UE’s total.
Game 2: UE 2, UNI 3
Game two remained scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning when sophomore Brianna Villanueva delivered a two-out pinch-hit single to score Gaertner from third base. Stahlhut followed with another single to move Villanueva to third base before Kelci Alsip hit the third consecutive single for the Aces to plate Villanueva and give UE the 2-0 lead.
The Panthers answered in the top of the sixth as Haley Kriener hit a three-run home run over the centerfield fence to put UNI on top 3-2. The two-out blast was all the Panthers would need as the Aces were unable to score another run in the final two frames.
As a team, UE posted five total hits while committing no errors in the loss. Gaertner was the leading hitter for the Aces, going 2-for-3 at the plate with a pair of doubles.
Junior Maggie Little (2-5) took the hard-luck loss on the mound after throwing three innings of scoreless relief before giving up the home run to Kriener.
