EVANSVILLE, Ind. – With just two weeks remaining in Missouri Valley Conference play, the University of Evansville softball team will travel to Carbondale, Ill., to take on Southern Illinois in a single game matchup Tuesday at 4:00 CDT. After a split in last week’s doubleheader, the Aces look to win the series with a victory in the rubbermatch.
The Aces (11-36) enter the contest ranked eighth in the MVC with a 5-15 conference record. Evansville most recently comes off a 1-2 showing in at Wichita State.
The Aces hosted the doubleheader against the Salukis last week. With the meeting ending in a split, Evansville carries the series’ momentum into Tuesday after taking a 3-0 shutout victory over the Salukis in the nightcap.
Southern Illinois (31-13), who had won 10 games in a row before being blanked by the Aces, enters the game as the third place team in the Valley with a 13-3 MVC record. The Salukis rebounded from Wednesday’s shutout with a two-game sweep of Missouri State last weekend.
Senior Jen Stahlhut paces the Evansville offense, batting .343 from the left side. Stahlhut is just one double away from tying Jamie Davison’s (2001-04) record of 48 career doubles at UE.
Freshman Katie Sears has been hot at the plate as of late, tallying at least one hit in her last five games. The Chicago, Ill., native hit .467 last week, going 7-for-15 over the five game stretch with four runs scored and one RBI.
Freshman Taylor Perry, who scattered just five hits in Wednesday’s shutout over the Salukis, enters Tuesday with a team-best 4.50 ERA in 88.2 innings on the mound. Perry (3-9) posted a 2-1 record with 12 strikeouts and an ERA of 2.72 in her three appearances last week.
Scouting the Salukis
Southern Illinois Salukis (31-13, 13-3)
Mallory Duran leads the Salukis and ranks second in the Valley with a .410 batting average. The leadoff batter has posted a league-best .494 on base percentage and leads the conference with 47 runs scored. Last week against the Aces, Duran went 4-for-8 at the plate with a home run and an RBI. Chelsea Held had a 4-for-6 performance with two home runs in last week’s doubleheader, tallying a pair of hits in each game.
Danielle Glosson (20-7) will most likely get the start on the mound for the Salukis. The senior has collected a 2.19 ERA in 195.1 innings of work. Glosson ranks fourth in the Valley with 163 strikeouts, eight of which were against the Aces in the first game of Wednesday’s doubleheader.
