University of Evansville baseball standout
Cody Fick is one big step closer to making another All-America team. Chosen eight days ago as a Louisville Slugger All-American by the publication 'Collegiate Baseball,' Fick today was chosen as the District V Player of the Year by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers of America. District V includes all Division I players in the states of Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, Minnesota and Wisconsin. The NCBWA All-America Team will be announced next week.
Fick last week became the seventh All-American in Aces' history, and the first since pitcher Steve Obenchain in 2002. Fick was taken as a pitcher by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 23rd round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Tuesday, becoming the 29th University of Evansville player to go in the draft since UE entered the Missouri Valley Conference in 1995. He is a top candidate for the Jon Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award. Primarily a third baseman, Fick hit .406 and was among the national leaders with 71 RBIs in 53 games. He topped the team in eight different statistical categories as a hitter. Used sparingly as a pitcher before this season, Fick became one of the best hurlers in the Missouri Valley Conference as a senior, compiling a 7-4 record and 2.36 ERA. Fick pitched five complete games and a pair of shutouts in 11 starts.
The other 2011 NCBWA District Players of the Year include District I: SS-3B Matt Gedman (Massachusetts); District II: OF George Springer (Connecticut); District III: 1B Adam Brett Walker (Jacksonville); District IV: SP-UT Danny Hultzen (Virginia); District VI: C Chris O’Brien (Wichita State); District VII: SP Taylor Jungmann (Texas); District VIII: UT C.J. Cron (Utah); District IX: SP Trevor Bauer (UCLA).
