EVANSVILLE, Ind. – A game-tying penalty kick in the 73rd minute turned the tide of Monday’s men’s soccer exhibition match between the University of Evansville and Saint Louis University, as the Billikens topped UE, 2-1, at Arad McCutchan Stadium.
After a scoreless first half, Evansville took the lead when freshman
Charlie Macias knocked in a goal from the left side of the box past goalkeeper Nick Shackelford in the 49th minute of play.
However, the Billikens answered back when senior Mike Roach was awarded a penalty kick after a hand ball. Roach’s goal skidded to the right of diving freshman goalie
Eric Teppen, tying the score, 1-1, in the 73rd minute of play.
At the 83:10 mark, Saint Louis tallied the game-winning goal when Roach’s pass to Hansel Reyes on the right side of the box found the back right corner of the net.
Despite the outcome, Evansville outshot the Billikens, 12-9, and had a lot of good scoring looks and opportunities throughout the match. SLU had seven shots on goal, compared to the Aces’ four. Senior
Tad Kreamalmeyer led UE’s offensive attack with four shots, followed by freshman
Ryan Stallings’ three.
Junior
Robert Randant, who played the first half of the match in the net, recorded three saves. Teppen tallied two saves in the second 45:00 minutes of play.
The Aces have one last exhibition match on Friday versus the UE Alumni, starting at 5:00 p.m. before opening the 2011 regular season at the University of Kentucky Tournament on Sept. 2. The UE women’s soccer team will also play a regular season match against Central Michigan following the men’s exhibition contest Friday.
