BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The University of Evansville cross country team competed at the 2011 Indiana Intercollegiates as the women’s team came home in eighth place while the men placed ninth. The ninth place showing by the men was their top effort in the event's history.
"It was a good afternoon for both teams, they each ran a little bit better according to what everyone else did last week against similar teams," head coach Don Walters said. "I am pleased with what I saw today."
Kelby Jenkins was the leading runner for the women, placing 33
rd overall with a time of 19:07.
Lauren Zeabart was second on the squad, finishing in a time of 19:18, seven seconds ahead of senior
Melissa Truex.
Nicole Kreuzman recorded a time of 19:55 and was followed by
Alyssa Moran (20:22) and
Jacqueline Carlson (20:27).
The University of Indiana took top honors in the race. The Hoosiers finished with 19 points, taking care of second place Butler by 44 points. Purdue came in third place with 78 tallies. The Purple Aces were eighth with a 245. Chelsea Blanchard of IU was the top individual, coming in at a time of 17:35. She was followed by a pair of teammates as the Hoosiers finished in six of the top eight positions.
For the second consecutive week,
Andrew Barrett paced the men’s squad, finishing 34
th with a time of 26:01 in the 8K meet.
Josh Genet finished in 40
th, just eight seconds behind Barrett.
Cody Stein was the third Ace to cross the line at a time of 26:12.
Purdue was victorious in the 8K as the Boilermakers edged Indiana by five points (35-40). Indiana State came in third place with a score of 59. The Boilermakers swept the top three spots on the individual side, led by Stephen Shulz. Shulz came in at 24:48, one second ahead of teammate Cale Allen. Charles White came in third place with a 24:53.
Next Saturday, the Aces will be back in action, traveling to the Saluki Invitational. The meet is set to begin at 10 a.m.
