PEORIA, Ill. – With 29 seconds remaining in double overtime, freshman
Dylan Terry chipped in a pass from junior
Jesse Sharp to capture Bradley University’s Grand Prairie Classic championship with a 2-1 golden goal victory over Memphis (5-1-1). The Purple Aces spoiled Memphis’ perfect record, as UE improved to 4-2-0 on the season.
Sharp was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, tallying a goal and three assists in the two matches. Terry, freshman
Ryan Stallings, and freshman goalkeeper
Eric Teppen were named to the all-tournament team.
“Memphis is the best team we’ve played so far this year,” said head coach
Mike Jacobs. “They have warranted the national attention they have received in polls and we were very fortunate to get the result against them.”
“Our guys played well and had great determination,” Jacobs added. “Good teams find a way to grind out wins, and the hope for us is that we are developing into a team like that.”
Just 3:28 into the contest, Stallings found the back of the net on a breakaway from 12 yards out. Sharp and Terry were both credited with the assists.
In the 26th minute of play, the Tigers tied it up, 1-1, with Mark Sherrod’s sixth goal of the year from the left post.
A defensive battle the rest of the way, the score remained frozen until Terry’s heroic goal in the waning seconds.
Teppen recorded seven saves in the match, as the Aces were outshot 18-12 and 8-4 on goal.
Terry led the offense with three shots, while freshman
Peter May and Sharp each had two.
The Aces are back in action Friday when they head back to Lexington, Ky. to face the University of Kentucky at 6:00 p.m. CT. UE also takes on Belmont Sunday at 1:00 p.m. CT in Nashville, Tenn.
