Streaking Men’s Soccer Up Against No. 21 UK And Belmont

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Coming off a championship title at the Hotels at Grand Prairie Classic and three straight victories, the University of Evansville men’s soccer team looks to keep the momentum going when the Purple Aces travel to No. 21 University of Kentucky and Belmont University this weekend. After playing in UK’s Tournament three weeks ago, but not facing the host team, the Aces head back to Lexington Friday at 6:00 p.m. CT. UE will then travel to Nashville to face the Bruins Sunday at 1:00 p.m. CT

SCOUTING THE WILDCATS (6-3-1, 0-0 C-USA)
No. 21 Kentucky comes off a tough 2-0 loss to No. 3 Creighton Wednesday night. UK, ranks second in the NCAA in goals scored, but could not get anything past the Bluejays; the only team in the NCAA to not allow a goal in 2011. UK has suffered only three losses on the year, all coming on the road, at Stanford, at No. 13 Cal and at No. 3 Creighton, while the Wildcats have recorded impressive wins over No. 15 Brown and No. 9 Michigan. UK entered the week outshooting the opposition 161-84 and outscoring foes 22-14., averaging 17.9 shots and 2.44 goals per contest. Tyler Riggs (8g, 4a, 20pts) and Matt Lodge (6g, 5a, 17pts) pilot the nation’s second-best offense, while Tyler Beadle has played 721:56 minutes in net with a 5-3-0 record, 27 saves, and one shutout.
 
SCOUTING THE BRUINS (4-3-0, 0-0 A-Sun)
This week, Belmont received votes in the NSCAA South Region poll for the first time since 2008. Like the Aces, the Bruins have won their last three matches, including a tournament title at Lipscomb University’s Hyatt Place Invitational, topping Bowling Green (3-2) and IPFW (4-0). Belmont will face SIU Edwardsville Thursday before meeting Evansville Sunday. Reigning A-Sun Player of the Week Brandon Tarr leads the Bruins with five goals, an assist, and 11 points. Tarr, Nico Olsak (2g, 4a, 8pts), Edgardo Podilla, and Bradley Shuck were named to Lipscomb’s all-tournament team. In goal, Lou Manning has played all 630:00 minutes, with a 1.57 GAA, 35 saves, a .761 save percentage, and one shutout.

Evansville comes off an exciting championship victory at Bradley University’s Grand Prairie Classic, overcoming an undefeated Memphis team, 2-1, in double overtime. Freshman Dylan Terry scored the game-winning goal with 29 seconds remaining in the match. Junior Jesse Sharp was named MVP, while Terry, freshman Ryan Stallings, and freshman goalkeeper Eric Teppen were named to the all-tournament team. On the season, Sharp leads the Aces with three goals, five assists, and 11 points. Stallings (3g, 2a, 8pts) and Terry (2g, 1a, 5pts) have also tallied multiple goals this fall. In net, Teppen has played 379:31 minutes with a 3-1-0 record and two shutouts. He owns a 0.47 GAA with 21 saves and a .913 save percentage.

SHARP SHOOTER
Jesse Sharp was named the Most Valuable Player of the Hotels at Grand Prairie Classic hosted by Bradley University, leading Evansville to a perfect weekend and championship. Sharp recorded one goal and three assists on the weekend, including the game-winning goal and a helper in UE’s 4-0 shutout over Loyola-Chicago. In the title match versus an undefeated Memphis team that received national poll votes this season, Sharp earned the assists on both of UE’s goals, including the golden goal with 29 seconds remaining in the second overtime period. For the third straight weekend, the Warsaw, Ind. native was named to an all-tournament team.
 
TOP HONORS FOR TEPPEN
Freshman goalkeeper Eric Teppen earned a spot on College Soccer News’ National Team of the Week, as well as was named Missouri Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week. Teppen was also named to the all-tournament team at the Hotels at Grand Prairie Classic hosted by Bradley University, leading Evansville to a championship with two wins, a shutout, and 17 saves. Teppen tallied his second shutout of the season with a career high 10 saves, as Evansville routed Loyola-Chicago, 4-0, in the tournament-opening match. The Evansville, Ind, native also recorded the victory with seven saves in UE’s double-overtime championship triumph over Memphis. Teppen made three spectacular saves in the second overtime period that extended the match, setting up UE’s winning goal in the waning seconds of the contest. Teppen played all 199:31 minutes in the net over the weekend with a 0.45 GAA.

FANTASTIC FRESHMEN
UE’s freshman class took the reigns at Bradley’s Grand Prairie Classic, scoring five of Evansville’s six goals and accounted for 13 of UE’s 20 points. Ryan Stallings, a freshman from Cox Creek, Ky. scored three goals and was named to the all-tournament team, along with classmates Dylan Terry and Eric Teppen. Terry scored the game-winning golden goal with 29 seconds remaining in the second overtime period to capture the championship over Memphis, while Teppen recorded 17 saves, a shutout, and two wins in net.
 
SPOILER ALERT
Evansville played spoilers this weekend, ruining Memphis’ perfect 5-0-1 record. Memphis topped No. 18 Bradley, 1-0, Friday, before facing UE in the title match of the Hotels at Grand Prairie Classic hosted by Bradley University. The Aces won, 2-1 (2OT).
 
NATONAL RANKINGS

Goalkeeper Eric Teppen ranks fifth in the NCAA with a .913 save percentage,11th in the nation with a .475 goals against average, and 26th in saves per game with 5.25 per contest. Jesse Sharp ranks ninth in the nation in total assists, recording five in six matches. He also ranks 13th in assists per game, averaging 0.67.
