CARBONDALE, Ill. – Both the men’s and women’s cross country teams for the University of Evansville recorded second place finishes in Saturday’s Saluki Invitational.
Southern Illinois won both races with the Purple Aces finishing second. The Saluki women finished with 21 points while UE came in with 43. On the men’s side, SIU tallied 15 points with UE coming in with 50.
“Both of our teams ran very well today,” head coach Don Walters said. “The conditions were very muddy and slowed the times down, but we ran hard and came away with a good result.”
Kelby Jenkins and
Lauren Zeabart each recorded top five finishes in the 5-K. Jenkins ran a 19:07 to take second place, just three seconds off of the winning pace, set by Lacey Gibson of SIU. Zeabart came in with a solid 19:18.
Three other Aces came away with top 15 finishes as
Nicole Kreuzman was 11
th with a 19:47. She was closely followed by
Melissa Truex who was 12
th, a second back.
Jacqueline Carlson came in 13
th with a 20:29.
Morgan Downs and
Kirsten Perrey also recorded top 20 finishes.
Andrew Barrett was the top runner for the men’s squad, recording a sixth place finish with his time of 26:34 in the 8-K event.
Cody Stein finished in ninth place while
Josh Genet rounded out the top ten with an even 27:00 time.
Samuel Mires notched a 12
th place finish while
Brady Hall finished 13
th.
The Salukis swept the top five positions in the 8-K to win the team championship.
Both teams will be back on the course this Friday in Cary, N.C. to take part in the Great American Cross Country Festival. It is set for a 2:30 p.m. start time.
