CARBONDALE, Ill. –
Both the men’s and women’s cross country teams for the University of Evansville recorded second place finishes in Saturday’s Saluki Invitational.

Southern Illinois won both races with the Purple Aces finishing second.  The Saluki women finished with 21 points while UE came in with 43.  On the men’s side, SIU tallied 15 points with UE coming in with 50.

“Both of our teams ran very well today,” head coach Don Walters said.  “The conditions were very muddy and slowed the times down, but we ran hard and came away with a good result.”

Kelby Jenkins and Lauren Zeabart each recorded top five finishes in the 5-K.  Jenkins ran a 19:07 to take second place, just three seconds off of the winning pace, set by Lacey Gibson of SIU.  Zeabart came in with a solid 19:18.

Three other Aces came away with top 15 finishes as Nicole Kreuzman was 11th with a 19:47.  She was closely followed by Melissa Truex who was 12th, a second back.  Jacqueline Carlson came in 13th with a 20:29.  Morgan Downs and Kirsten Perrey also recorded top 20 finishes.

Andrew Barrett was the top runner for the men’s squad, recording a sixth place finish with his time of 26:34 in the 8-K event.  Cody Stein finished in ninth place while Josh Genet rounded out the top ten with an even 27:00 time.  Samuel Mires notched a 12th place finish while Brady Hall finished 13th.

The Salukis swept the top five positions in the 8-K to win the team championship.

Both teams will be back on the course this Friday in Cary, N.C. to take part in the Great American Cross Country Festival.  It is set for a 2:30 p.m. start time.
