EVANSVILLE, Ind. – On a day that saw temperatures in triple-digits, the University of Evansville cross country team hosted its annual UE Mid-America Opener at the UE Cross Country Course.

The event began with a 6K men’s race before the participating women’s squads ran four kilometers. The Purple Aces put forth a strong effort, with the men finishing third with an average of 19:41 and the women posting a 16:11 average to also finish third.

“It was extremely hot on the course, I am proud of our teams and all of the participants for their efforts under these conditions,” head coach Don Walters said. “It is hard to judge any performances given the heat we had, but I am extremely excited about where we stand and have high hopes for the upcoming season.”

Louisville took top honors on the men’s side, averaging 19:07, just edging out Indiana State who finished at 19:13. Tyler Bryne of the Cardinals was the individual champion, running the course in 18:30. He beat fellow Cardinal Gordon Dooley to the line by 14 seconds.

Cody Stein was the top finisher for UE, coming in at 19:11 to place seventh. Brian Denny and Josh Genet place 11th and 12th, respectively.

Indiana State came in first on the women’s side, setting the pace with an average of 15:12. That mark was 39 seconds over second place Louisville, who came in at 15:51.

Kacie Klem of ISU came in first place with a time of 14:51, edging out Madie Davidson of Louisville by six seconds. Members of the Indiana State team came in third through seventh on the individual side.

Kelby Jenkins led UE with a ninth place finish. She ran the course in 15:44. Lauren Zeabart came in just behind Jenkins in tenth place with a 15:51 run.

Next weekend, the Aces will be right back in action, traveling to the EIU Panther Open on September 9. The race is set to begin at 4:45 p.m.
