LEXINGTON, Ky. – Wright State scored two goals in the final 15 minutes of play Sunday afternoon at the University of Kentucky Invitational, as the University of Evansville men’s soccer team fell, 2-0, in the Purple Aces’ second match of the 2011 regular season. Finishing the tournament with a 1-1 record, junior Jesse Sharp and sophomore Alex Kapsalis were named to the all-tournament team.
“I congratulate Wright State,” said head coach Mike Jacobs. “They had tremendous character and played hard all the way through, and really deserved to win the match."
"I also credit our guys, who played a strong 75 minutes, despite looking tired and run down,” added Jacobs. “The challenge for upcoming matches will be putting a full 90:00 minutes together. Overall, it was an encouraging first weekend with a very young group.”
In the 76th minute, the Raiders broke onto the board on Derek Zuniga’s successful penalty shot. Wright State struck again in the 89th minute when Bryce Rockwell-Ashton found the net on a ball that played around in the box. Zuniga and Drake Stewart were credited with the assists.
The Raiders just barely edged Evansville in shots, leading 14-12, in the evenly played match. Wright State also had a 7-3 shot on goal and 5-4 advantage on corner kicks.
Dylan Terry led the Aces with five shots, including three on goal, while Kapsalis and Sharp each took two shots.
Junior keeper Robert Randant play the entire match in goal, tallying five saves, while the Raiders’ Craig Feehan made three saves and recorded the shutout.
The Aces are back in action Friday when they host the ProRehab Aces Soccer Classic, welcoming Marist, Eastern Illiniois, and SIU Edwardsville. Evansville faces off with Marist College at 7:30 p.m. Friday, then takes on Eastern Illinois Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
