CHARLESTON, Ill. – The Purple Aces cross country team will take part in the Walt Crawford EIU Open on Friday afternoon.
Action gets underway at 4:45 p.m. with a women’s 5K race followed by an 8K men’s event. Several Division I programs are also set to race including Eastern Illinois, IUPUI, North Dakota and Southern Illinois. Seven other squads from various divisions will also be running.
Last weekend, the Aces raced in the UE Mid-America Opener, which was run at the UE Cross Country Course in Evansville. The men’s team finished in third place with 63 points and were led by a 19:11, which was run by junior Cody Stein. Stein finished the event in seventh place overall.
Just behind Stein were Brian Denny and Josh Genet. Denny, a senior, ran a 19:23 to finish in 11th place while Genet came in eight seconds later in 12th.
On the women’s side, the Aces notched a third place finish in last weekend’s event. Sophomore Kelby Jenkins led the way for UE with a ninth place finish. Her time of 15:44 edged out teammate Lauren Zeabart, who came in tenth.
Evansville will be right back on the course next weekend, traveling to Bloomington, Ind. for the Indiana Intercollegiate Championships. The meet is set for 2:30 p.m. on September 16.
