Swimming and Diving Excels at Butler Five-Way Double Duel

INDIANAPOLIS –
The University of Evansville swimming and diving teams got their seasons off to great starts Sunday at the Butler Five-Way Double Duel Meet in Indianapolis, as the women finished a perfect 4-0 and the men 2-1 at a meet that featured the Aces, host Butler, Wright State, St. Louis and Valparaiso.
 
On the women’s side, UE claimed victories in seven different events, including Abby Smith, who outpaced the field in the 50-yard freestyle (23.94) and 100-yard freestyle (53.78) events, in addition to leading the Aces to a win in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:38.39) with Mackenize Harris, Maja Magnusson and Michelle Tipton.
 
Mackenzie Powell also put together an impressive day in the pool, winning the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:24.90 and finishing third in the 400-yard individual medley in 4:42.99, while helping the 400-yard medley relay squad to a win in 4:01.26 with teammates Taylor Shotwell, Samantha Montgomery and Michelle Tipton.
 
Diver Sadie Wells captured both the one-meter and three-meter diving events, posting scores of 229.15 and 260.55, respectively.
 
Other top finishes for the Evansville women included Caroline Lee, who posted a pair of second-place finishes in the 1000-yard freestyle (11:12.93) and 200-yard backstroke (2:11.62), Melissa Thurman, who had a pair of runner-up finishes in the 400-yard IM (4:42.67) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:28.94), and Montgomery, who finished second in the 200-yard butterfly (2:14.57) and third in the50-yard freestyle (25.35), in addition to her relay victory.
 
For the men, Mallet Reid made it a clean sweep for the Aces in the diving events, winning the one-meter event with a score of 258.55 and the three-meter event with a 231.35.
 
In the pool, Evansville was led by Ashton Bishop and Troy Burger, who each recorded event wins.  Bishop touched the wall in 47.36 seconds to win the 100-yard freestyle and finished second in the 50-yard freestyle in 21.81 seconds.  Burger’s win came in the 200-yard breaststroke, as he bested the field in a time of 2:12.83 and added a third-place finish in the 400-yard IM in 4:20.23.  Both Bishop and Burger were joined by Reid Mobley and Alex Seward in the 400-yard medley relay team that finished third in 3:33.60.
 
Other notable performances for the UE men included a second-place finish by Seward in the 200-yard butterfly (2:00.83) and third-place finishes by Garrett Johnson in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:16.42), Cameron Wickes in the 200-yard freestyle (1:47.70) and 500-yard freestyle (4:53.30), #Ethan O’Rourke# in the 200-yard backstroke (2:01.09) and the 400-yard freestyle relay team of O’Rourke, Wickes, Kyle Tiemann and Daniel Musselwhite (3:15.68).
 
Both the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will return to the pool on Oct. 13, when they host Southern Illinois at 1 p.m.
