BOX SCORE
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Despite outshooting visiting Marshall 13-8, the University of Evansville men’s soccer team fell to the Thundering Herd, 2-0, Saturday night at Arad McCutchan Stadium.
Marshall (9-1-1) goalkeeper Daniel Withrow made six saves, including four in the second half, to record his school-recorded eighth shutout of the season. The Aces (6-4-0), who donned pink jerseys for the “Kick for the Cure” event, put four of their eight second-half shots on goal, but could not beat Withrow, and a late insurance goal sealed the MU victory.
Evansville controlled much of the action in the early stages, taking five of the game’s first six shots. Withrow saved a pair of back-to-back, close-range shots by
Faik Hajderovic and
Dylan Terry in the 21st minute.
The Thundering Herd gained momentum as the half continued and got their first goal in the 35th minute. Andrew Ferguson collected a loose ball deep in UE’s defensive third and lobbed a shot from the top of the 18-yard box over the outstretched arms of Aces goalkeeper
Eric Teppen for this third goal of the season.
Much of the action on the second half was played in the middle third of the pitch, until both teams began to create scoring chances over the final 20 minutes.
Marshall’s Tom Jackson finally put the game out of reach in the 86th minute, scoring his seventh goal of the season, after a costly UE turnover in its own defensive end. Jesus Mafouta gained control of a misplayed ball 22 yards out and sent a pass to the left side of the box, where Jackson buried an uncontested shot from 15 yards.
The Aces pushed forward in the final five minutes, taking a pair of shots, including one on goal, but could not avoid the shutout and an end to their two-game winning streak.
Hajderovic led Evansville with four shots and two shots on goal and
Mark Anthony Gonzalez fired a trio of shots. Teppen made one save in the loss, as he fell to 6-4-0 in net this season.
The Aces will open conference play Wednesday night when they travel to Springfield, Mo., for a 7 p.m. tilt with Missouri State.
