Game One Box Score (UE/Auburn)
Game Two Box Score (UE/Drexel)
AUBURN, Ala. -- The University of Evansville (5-8) dropped a pair of games in day two of the War Eagle Classic, falling to No. 19 Auburn 3-1 before losing to Drexel 1-0 in eight innings.
Freshman
Kayla Fortner extended her hitting streak to 13 games, going 3-for-6 with one RBI on the day.
The Aces will wrap up the War Eagle Classic with a single game tomorrow, facing George Washington at 9:00 a.m.
Game 1: UE 1, # 19 Auburn 3
A leadoff double and a fielder’s choice in the bottom of the first was all the Tigers needed to produce a two-run inning to take an early lead over the Aces in game one. Lauren Guzman started the inning with a double to centerfield before advancing to third as Brooke Lathan reached on a fielder’s choice. Both were able to cross the plate later in the inning, Guzman scoring on an infield groundout while Lathan came home on a throw down to second as catcher Halie Malone picked off an Auburn runner at the bag.
Auburn was able to add another run to its lead in the bottom of the third as Elizabeth Eisterhold hit a solo home run, giving the Tigers a 3-0 lead going into the top of the fourth.
The score remained frozen over the next three innings. The Aces were finally able to break through in the top of the seventh, using back-to-back doubles by sophomore
Niki Rahming and Fortner to put a run on the board. But the one run wouldn’t be enough as Auburn starter Angel Bunner was able to shut down the rally, ending the inning to give the Tigers the 3-1 win.
Junior starter
Kendall Kautz took the loss on the mound, allowing two hits while fanning one Tiger batter in three innings of work. Sophomore
Taylor Perry was strong in the relief effort, holding Auburn scoreless while giving up just one hit and striking out three.
Fortner hit 2-for-3 at the plate, picking up the Aces’ only RBI of the game.
Game 2: UE 0, Drexel 1 (8 innings)
Game two proved to be a pitches’ duel, as both sides remained scoreless through seven innings, forcing the game into international tie-breaker.
With the score tied at 0-0 after regulation play, freshman
Mariah Ferguson, pinch running for Malone, was placed at second base to start the top of the eighth. Senior
Amy Gaertner singled through the right side, moving Ferguson to third. Gaertner then stole second before junior
Alicia Betancur followed with a walk to load the bases. Ferguson was thrown out at home on a fielder’s choice, as the bases remained loaded with one out on the board. But Drexel reliever Hillary Allen was able to force a strikeout and a groundout to end the threat and hold the Aces scoreless.
In the bottom of the frame, with a Drexel runner placed on second, UE reliever
Emily Morris issued a walked Paige Collings to put runners at first and second. Jenn Reading then singled up the middle, but Collings was out on the play at second. An intentional walk loaded the bases for the Dragons, as the Aces looked for a force out at the plate. But a hit by pitch put the next batter on base, bringing in the winning run and ending the game with a 1-0 Drexel win.
Evansville tallied seven hits as a team in the loss. Betancur led the Aces at the plate, going 2-for-2 with two singles and a pair of walks.
Morris took the loss, allowing one run and one hit in one inning of relief work. Starter
Sarah Patterson scattered seven hits while striking out four in 6.1 innings in the circle.
