Tennis Splits Pair Of Thursday Matches

ORLANDO, Fla. –
In a pair of matches on Thursday, the University of Evansville women’s tennis team picked up a 5-2 win over Sacred Heart before falling to Radford, 4-3, in Orlando.
 
With the split, the Purple Aces move to 8-4 on the season.  They will wrap up their trip to Florida on Friday, facing off against James Madison at 2 p.m. CT.
 
“I was proud of our effort today, our second match was extremely close with four 3-set matches,” head coach Nick Mueller said.  “Both schools we played today have great programs, we just need to regroup to face JMU tomorrow.”
 
Evansville picked up the doubles point with a pair of victories as Dora Kotsiou and Natasha James took down Kate Donnelly and Kristina Chao, 8-6 while Aleks Dzakula and Jessica Raatz picked up an 8-0 sweep of Nicole Rydzewski and Kristin Legenza.  Gabi Kaldan and Delaney Downing beat Emily Richardson and Kelsey Costales, 8-3.
 
The Aces grabbed four wins in singles action, including Emily Richardson, who grabbed her first singles win of the spring with a win over Downing, 6-4, 6-2.  Dzakula topped Kaldan (6-3, 6-1), Gaby Fifer defeated Chao (6-1, 6-1) and Raatz grabbed a win over Legenza (6-1, 6-3).  Taking losses for UE were James, who was beated by Rydzewski (6-4, 6-4) and Mina Milovic, who fell to Kate Donnelly (6-4, 6-7, 10-8).
 
In the afternoon match, the Highlanders earned the doubles point as Richardson/Costales (8-6) and Dzakula/Raatz (8-6) took losses.  Kotsiou and James picked up an 8-5 win over Taylor Newman and Mia Drobnjak.
 
Singles play was hotly-contested  as four matches went to three sets.  The lone Aces to win a three-set match was Dzakula, who took down Hannah Crawford (6-3, 5-7, 13-11).  Taking close losses were James (6-3, 4-6, 6-3), Milovic  (5-7, 7-5, 10-8) and Costales (6-3, 1-6, 6-3).  Kotsiou and Fifer picked up wins against the Highlanders.
