Aces Student-Athletes To Be Recognized Wednesday

4/24/2012 10:48:00 AM

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Prior to Wednesday’s University of Evansville softball against Austin Peay, the UE Student Athlete Advisory Committee will be presenting awards to recognize the top teams and top 20 student-athletes for the service to the community.

With the softball game set at 5 p.m., the presentations will take place on the field approximately 20 minutes prior to first pitch.  In a record-setting year for service, Aces student-athletes have accumulated over 3,400 hours of service while helping 101 agencies in the community.

The top two teams that will be recognized for their service are the Aces women’s basketball and women’s golf squads.

“We are very grateful that our program is being recognized for our community service efforts,” head women’s basketball coach Oties Epps said.  “Our staff and our student-athletes understand and value the opportunity we have to give back to our community. We are committed to serving the Evansville community and it will always be an important part of our program.”

Aside from the women’s basketball team, the women’s golf team is also being honored.  Senior and SAAC representative Sydney Skiles commented on the honor.

“As a student athlete, it feels great to give back to our community.  We are able to influence young children through Just Read and donating money to Toys for Tots,” Skiles said.  “We are given so much at the University of Evansville, and it is a great to be involved in the community and make a difference in people's lives.”

Along with the two team honors, twenty student-athletes will be recognized for their service, led by cross country runner Matthew Hamilton, who has accumulated 100 hours of service.  Swimmer Kyle Tiemann has notched 54 hours while Khristian Hart has recorded 50.5.

“We are extremely proud of our student-athletes.  “They have volunteered at over 100 organizations and spent more than 3,400 hours during the academic year contributing to our community,” UE Senior Associate Athletics Director and SWA Sarah Solinsky said.  “The student-athletes find community service a rewarding aspect of their overall experience at UE.”
