EVANSVILLE, Ind. – After its best MVC finish in 13 years coupled with its third postseason berth in the last four seasons, the University of Evansville men’s basketball team will look to build on that success in the 2012-13 campaign where the squad is set to play at least 14 teams that advanced to postseason play last year.
Evansville will play 31 regular-season games this season with 13 non-conference contests and a full slate of 18 Missouri Valley Conference games. Of the 31 scheduled games, 20 will take place against postseason teams from 2011-12.
“We are very excited to get our season underway,” head coach Marty Simmons said. “It is great for our program to be able to play 20 of our games against postseason teams. Our non-conference schedule will help to prepare us for the Valley, which will be as strong as ever this year.”
A trip to Notre Dame to play in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic officially opens the season on November 10. The Aces play the Irish for the first time since December 6, 1992 where UND picked up a 76-70 victory. Last year, the Irish fell to Xavier in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The tournament continues a week later in Evansville as the Aces will play three games over the course of three days. Buffalo, Western Illinois and Yale (each a postseason team last year) make the trip to Evansville. All four teams will play each other over the course of the event.
A tenuous stretch continues as just three days following the completion of the tournament, Evansville travels on a return trip to Tennessee Tech, who came to the Ford Center last December. Alabama A&M will make the trek to UE on November 26 for its first meeting against the Aces.
In its Mountain West-MVC Challenge matchup this year, Evansville will travel to Fort Collins, Colo. to take on Colorado State. The Rams rode a 20-12 mark into the NCAA’s, falling to Murray State in the opening round. Following a December 5 home tilt against Miami (Ohio), Evansville will host the same Racers that toppled CSU in the tournament and went 31-2 last year.
Non-conference play wraps up with home games against Alabama A&M and Oakland City before UE travels to Hinkle Fieldhouse to play Butler on December 22.
As always, MVC play will feature home and road contests against the other nine teams in the league. Conference play is challenging from the start as the Aces begin league play on the road at defending MVC Tournament champion Creighton.
Missouri State will mark the home conference opener on January 2 while the final game of the regular season will pit Evansville against Indiana State at the Ford Center. This year’s Sears BracketBusters game, which will be played on the road, will take place on the weekend of February 22.
Arch Madness is set to take place from March 7 through the 10
th at Scottrade Center in St. Louis.
The exhibition schedule will be announced at a later date.
