ATLANTA – Jesse Sharp scored two minutes into overtime to give the University of Evansville a 3-2 victory in its first road contest of the season on Saturday evening.
With the impressive victory, Evansville moves to 3-0 on the season while Georgia State falls to 2-1. Each squad received three votes in this week’s national poll.
A defensive struggle ensued in the opening half but that all changed in the second 45 minutes as the teams would combine to score on four occasions. Conor Acheson opened up the scoring just three minutes into the second stanza on a header inside the right post.
Fourteen minutes later,
Nick Schroeder got the Aces on the board after he got a rebound past GSU goalkeeper CJ Cochran. Alex Kapsalis was credited with the helper. At the 76-minute mark, it was
Mark Gonzalez finding his way into the scorebook as he headed the ball into the back of the net with some help from Luis Enrique Romero.
With less than two minutes remaining, Georgia State scored off of a cross with Alex Vivanco being credited with the goal. The final minute of regulation finished up scoreless as the contest advanced to overtime.
Refusing to let the last-minute goal affect them, Evansville regrouped and took the victory as Nick Schroeder found Jesse Sharp for the game-winning score on a shot to the lower left.
Eric Teppen had a solid night in goal, making six saves on eight shots. Georgia State recorded 19 shots on the night while the Aces tallied 14. Cochran made two saves on five shots on goal.
Next weekend, the Aces will look to keep their early season success going as they play host to the ProRehab Aces Soccer Classic. UE welcomes Bradley, Cincinnati and Portland to Arad McCutchan Stadium. The Aces will face the Pilots on Friday evening before squaring off against the Bearcats on Sunday afternoon at 2:30 p.m.
