EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Fall sports are officially in full swing as the latest squad to begin its schedule is the University of Evansville women’s golf squad, who is set to play at the Redbird Invitational at Weibring Golf Course in Normal, Ill. this weekend.
 
Set for Saturday and Sunday, the event will be 54 holes with 36 set for Saturday and the final 18 to take place on Sunday.  An 8:30 a.m. shotgun start will begin the action each day.
 
Aside from UE and host Illinois State, Akron, Ball State, Bradley, Bowling Green, Drake, Eastern Kentucky, Illinois Wesleyan, Oakland, Ohio, South Dakota State, Southern Illinois, Toledo and Western Illinois will participate in the tournament.
 
Evansville returns four players from last year’s squad, led by sophomore Cathy Doyle.  The Indianapolis, Ind. native posted a pair of second-place finishes last spring on her way to an average of 80.80 in 2012, a team low.  She took second-place honors at the Butler Invitational and the Belmont Invitational. 
 
Also returning is junior Sydney Skiles.  As the lone junior or senior on the team, her leadership will be depended upon with UE’s young squad.  As a sophomore, she had the second-lowest average for the full year with an 82.48, just 0.19 strokes behind Lauren Ellerman, who graduated this spring. 
 
Next up for the women following their opening tournament will be a trip to the SIUE Intercollegiate.  It is set for Sept. 24 and 25 at Sunset Hills C.C. in Edwardsville, Ill.
