Men's Results - Women's Results
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – University of Evansville senior
Kelby Jenkins won her third race of the season while
Josh Genet took 12
th to lead the Purple Aces cross country teams on Saturday at the Greater Louisville Classic.
Jenkins finished the event in a time of 17:37.28 to top the 329 runners in the race. Her effort was her fourth of the season under the 17:40 mark as she continues her assault on the UE school record for the 5K. Through five races this season, Jenkins has won three times while finishing second in the other two events.
In the men's 8K blue race, it was junior
Josh Genet posting the top finish for the Aces. He finished the run in a time of 25:56.11 to finish in 12
th place out of an amazing 289 runners. It was his top 8K time of the season by one second. Unofficially, the men finished in 16
th place out of 42 squads while the women completed the race in sixth place overall out of 51 teams.
For the second race in a row, the teams faced treacherous conditions as torrential rain hit Tom Sawyer State Park during the event. While times were obviously slower across the board due to those conditions, nothing dampened the enthusiasm shown by head coach Don Walters following the race.
"Across the board, my freshmen stepped up on the men's side. Ross (Frondorf) was third overall for me and did extremely well," Walters said. "The women also did their job protecting Kelby at the start and she just kept getting away more and more."
"It rained all day yesterday and this morning, making for a very wet course," Walters explained. "Each race that went out was slower and slower, but out runners went out there and did a great job. Times were down about 25 seconds, but as a team, everyone did well. We went out for place and that is exactly what we did today."
Jon Ashby completed the run in a time of 26:49.11 to take 55
th place while the aforementioned Frondorf was third for UE and 69
th/289. He set a PR with a 26:58.37. Fellow frosh
Ben Woolems came home 88
th with a 27:09.53, his top time at UE.
Kyle Wilson (29:06.61) rounded out the top five for Evansville and was followed by
James Paul (30:01.95) and
Billy McNicholas (30:02.92).
Laurel Wolfe was the second finisher for the women as her 19:16.97 was just two seconds off of her season best as she finished in 45
th place. Kirsten Perry and
Maria Lynn finished about two seconds apart as Perrey took 63
rd with a 19:29.22 while Lynn ran a 19:31.36 to take 68
th. Lynn's time was the best of her UE career by 0.24 seconds.
Sophomore
Elizabeth Kingshott posted a 19:36.22 on her way to an 82
nd place while
Jacqueline Carlson was 103
rd, finishing in 19:47.06. Both were their top runs of the year.
After battling rainy and slower conditions in the last two races, the Aces hope for better weather two weeks from today when they host the UE Invitational at the UE Cross Country Course north of Evansville. The duo of Genet and Jenkins will look to repeat their success of 2012 as each won their respective home event.
