SAN JOSE, Calif. – San José State used a second-half run to down the University of Evansville women's basketball team, 90-84, Sunday afternoon at The Event Center in San Jose, Calif. Junior
Mallory Ladd and freshman
Sasha Robinson both posted double-doubles for the Purple Aces in the loss.
Four Evansville (1-3) players scored in double figures, including freshman
Sara Dickey, who led the Aces with 23 points. Junior
Kat Taylor finished 5-for-8 from the field and hit nine free throws on her way to a career-high 21 points, while Ladd finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds for her 10th career double-double, and Robinson posted her first career double-double by scoring 10 points and hauling in 10 boards.
Dickey jumpstarted the UE offense in the early going, as she poured in 16 of Evansville's first 20 points to build a 20-12 lead for the Aces just over six minutes into the contest.
San José State responded by going on a 12-6 run over the next four minutes to take a 26-24 advantage, before Taylor capped a short UE scoring spurt with a pair of free throws to put Evansville back in front, 30-26, with 7:31 remaining in the first half.
After hitting six of their first 10 shots, the Aces went on a cold spell, connecting on just five of their next 20 to allow the Spartans to remain in the ballgame. Despite the shooting slump, Ladd was able to give UE its largest first-half lead at 40-32 with 2:55 remaining in the opening half by connecting on a 12-foot , baseline jumper.
However, SJSU responded by closing the half on a 12-2 run that was capped by a transition jumper from Britta Hall that gave San José State a 44-42 halftime lead.
Evansville opened the second half on a 6-0 run and pushed its lead to 57-50 on a Ladd three-pointer from the right wing with 14:42 to play that capped a 17-7 run by the Aces.
Dickey recorded her first basket of the second half at the 11:58 mark to give UE its first double-digit lead at 61-51, but the Spartans countered and went back on top, 66-64, with 8:42 showing on the clock on back-to-back triples by Rebecca Woodbury.
SJSU used that momentum to go on a run that would eventually be the deciding factor in the ballgame, as San José State outscored Evansville, 21-5, in a six-minute span and led 72-66 at the 5:59 mark.
Taylor ended SJSU's run with a pivotal long-range shot to pull the Aces back within one possession at 72-69 and connected on another triple at the 4:47 mark to trim San José State's advantage to 74-72.
The Spartans scored nine of the game's next 13 points to go up, 83-76, with 2:12 remaining, before Robinson hit a pair of free throws with 41.4 seconds remaining to bring UE within five, 84-79.
Evansville was forced to foul after Dickey missed a three that would have cut the SJSU lead to just one possession and Hall sealed the victory for San José State by knocking down a pair of free throws with just 16.1 seconds remaining in the game.
Woodberry led five Spartans in double figures with 18 points, Ta"Rea Cunnigan added 17 and Jasmine Smith finished with a double-double by scoring 13 points and pulling down 12 rebounds.
SJSU narrowly outrebounded Evansville, 46-45, but was able to collected 19 offensive boards and created 10 second-chance points to the Aces' six.
San José State forced 23 UE turnovers, turning them into 24 points and got 27 of its 90 points from its bench, while Evansville's bench accounted for just seven points.
The Aces will return to the Ford Center for their next game, when they welcome in-state rival Ball State for a 5:30 p.m. tilt on Wednesday, Nov. 20.
