TROY, Ala. – The University of Evansville softball team (0-2) fell in both games today against Virginia Tech and Troy at the Troy Invitational in Troy, Ala. The Aces lost, 3-2, in the first game to the Hokies, before the Trojans tallied a 5-0 win in the second game.
The Aces’ offense racked up five hits on the day by five different players, including junior
Kacey Rogers, who led UE with a .200 batting average and stole a base in her only attempt. Freshman #Kirsten O’Conner# tallied a double and an RBI for Evansville.
The Aces will return to the Troy Softball Complex for day two of the Troy Invitational, where tomorrow’s first pitch is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. against North Florida.
Game 1: Virginia Tech 3, Evansville 2
Virginia Tech came out strong in the first inning against the Aces, using a double down the left field line and a single to right field to take an early 1-0 lead.
The Hokies expanded their lead with a ground out to second that put them up 2-0 in the fourth, before a fifth-inning sacrifice fly to left field pushed Virginia Tech’s lead to 3-0.
The Aces battled back in the seventh, as sophomore
Victoria Dellorto and senior
Tamara Robey both singled, before sophomore
Kayla Fortner grounded out to the pitcher, allowing Robey and Dellorto to advance on the play. O’Conner doubled to right center, allowing Dellorto and Robey to cross the plate, making the score, 3-2, with Virginia Tech still in the lead.
Evansville’s comeback bid fell short, as the Hokie starter Kelly Heinz ended the game with a strikeout, leaving O’Conner stranded at second.
Heinz took the win for the Hokies, pitching 7.0 innings while tallying 13 strikeouts and allowing two runs. Freshman
Annie Moore suffered the loss in her collegiate debut, allowing three runs in 4.0 innings pitched, making her 0-1 on the season.
Game 2: Troy 5, Evansville 0
The Trojans were able to strike first off, taking advantage of an Evansville throwing error and took a 1-0 lead in the first.
Troy continued to score in the bottom of the third, after a two-run homer to right center off pitcher
Sarah Patterson, pushed the score to 3-0. The Trojans homered again in the fifth to open up a 5-0 lead, before downing the Aces in seven innings.
Fortner and Rogers tallied the only hits for UE in the loss, as Fortner delivered a one-out single in the sixth and Rogers led off the single with a single to center.
Troy pitcher Rachel Rigney tossed all 7.0 innings, walking five and tallying five strikeouts on the game. Patterson took the loss with 3.0 innings pitched and allowed two runs, falling to 0-1 on the season. Freshman
Sarah Baldwin pitched 2.0 innings in relief and allowed two runs with a pair of strikeouts, while junior
Taylor Perry tossed a scoreless seventh frame and stuck out one.
