TROY, Ala. – The University of Evansville softball team headed into day two of the Troy Invitational in Troy, Ala., losing 7-2 to North Florida before suffering a 10-2 loss against
Virginia Tech.
Evansville will wrap up the weekend at the Troy Softball Complex with a game against Troy which is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
Game 1: UE 2, North Florida 7
North Florida struck first for the Ospreys with a double to right center and a homer down the left field line off freshman pitcher
Annie Moore, to tally a 2-0 score in the first inning.
The Ospreys continued in the second, making it 3-0, after a single up the middle and an advance off a muffed throw. After back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the third, North Florida advanced over the Aces with a 4-0 lead.
The Aces answered back in the fifth, making it 4-1, after freshman #Kirsten O’Conner# hit a sacrifice fly out to right field, bringing senior
Tamara Robey in for the run. Senior
Kendall Kautz soon doubled to left center allowing sophomore
Kayla Fortner to notch the score 4-2.
The Ospreys seemed to be too much for Evansville as North Florida singled down the left field line to make it a 6-2 game in the bottom of the sixth. After a reach on a fielder’s choice, North Florida expanded their lead to put them up 7-2.
North Florida pitcher Kaylie Wallace took the win for the Ospreys, pitching 4.1 innings and tallying a pair of strikeouts while not allowing any runs. Moore took the loss, making her 0-2 on the season, as she pitched 4.0 innings, tallied two strikeouts, and allowed four runs. Junior
Taylor Perry pitched 2.0 innings in relief, allowing for three runs in the sixth and a scoreless frame in the seventh. Perry also notched a strikeout for the Aces.
Game 2: UE 2, Virginia Tech 10
Virginia Tech got off to an early lead after a throwing error and a double to left field, making it 2-0. The Hokies soon scored off a wild pitch by pitcher
Sarah Patterson, expanding the lead to 3-0.
Evansville answered back in the second with a homer to center field by sophomore
Kayla Fortner, but the Hokies quickly matched the power play with a homer of their own to center field, tallying the score to 5-1 in the bottom of the second.
Virginia Tech soon ran away with the score in the third inning after a single to right field put the Hokies up 7-1 on the Aces. After a run scored off a Virginia Tech sacrifice fly to left field and a wild pitch made by junior
Emily Morris, the Hokies ended the inning with a 9-1 lead.
The Aces were not ready to give up in the fourth after a Fortner single up the middle, allowing Robey to score, making it 9-2 with the Hokies still on top.
Evansville was unable to come back after Virginia Tech scored off a single up the middle in the bottom of the fifth, ending the game with a 10-2 victory over the Aces.
Virginia Tech pitcher Jasmin Harrell, who is now 4-0 on the season, took the win for the Hokies, pitching 4.0 innings with four strikeouts and allowing two runs. Patterson suffered the loss with 2.1 innings pitched, allowing seven runs and striking out two. Freshman
Sarah Baldwin stepped in at relief pitcher, allowing one run out of 1.1 innings pitched.
