Aces Softball Drops To Nebraska-Omaha in Two

JACKSON, Miss. –
The University of Evansville softball team wrapped up its weekend at the Jackson State Tournament in Jackson, Miss. with back-to-back losses to Nebraska-Omaha.
 
The Aces’ offense was able to tally 10 hits on the day with three RBI’s and three runs.
 
Evansville will open up at home next while hosting their own tournament March 2-3 that features teams IUPUI, Austin Peay, and Cleveland State. The Aces’ first pitch will be against Cleveland State on March 2 at 11:00 a.m. CST.
 
Game 1: UE 1, Nebraska-Omaha 9
The Aces were able to strike first in the first inning with a ground out to third base by senior Kendall Kautz and an error that allowed freshman #Kirsten O’Conner# to make it, 1-0, to lead Nebraska-Omaha.
 
After a scoreless second inning, the Mavericks answered back with a run of their own in the top of the third when a single allowed Nebraska-Omaha to even the score at 1-1. From there on out, Nebraska-Omaha caught fire and left the Aces scoreless in the next three innings.
 
The Mavericks were relentless in the fourth with four doubles, a triple, and a homer that tallied a five run stretch, putting them up on the Aces 6-1. Nebraska-Omaha expanded its lead in the fifth with a reach on an error and a single that left the Evansville trailing, 8-1.
 
Nebraska-Omaha was able to score off a single in the top of the sixth, making it a 9-1 game. Evansville was unable to get anything going with three ground outs that ended the game with a 9-1 win by Nebraska-Omaha.
 
Nebraska-Omaha pitcher Dana Elsasser took the win for the Mavericks, pitching 6.0 innings and tallying two strikeouts and allowing the Aces their only run. Freshman pitcher Sarah Baldwin was charged with the loss while tossing 3.2 innings, allowing four runs, and striking out one. Freshman Annie Moore and junior Emily Morris both saw action at the mound, combining for 2.1 innings and allowing two runs.
 
Game 2: UE 2, Nebraska-Omaha 3
The Mavericks took first to the score as a single and a home run put them up, 2-0, on Evansville in the bottom of the first.
 
After a scoreless next four innings, Nebraska-Omaha expanded its lead in the sixth after a line out to left field advanced the score 3-0
 
Evansville fought back in the top of the seventh with a single by Kautz that allowed junior Niki Rahming and senior Halie Malone to advance to home plate to tally the score, 3-2. The Aces were unable to continue their run as a fly out to right field ended the inning and they fell short to Nebraska-Omaha, 3-2.
 
Nebraska-Omaha pitcher Ashton Hughes was allotted the win for the Mavericks, pitching 6.2 innings and striking out four while allowing two runs. Senior pitcher Sarah Patterson was charged with the loss for the Aces, tossing 5.2 innings and striking out 10. Junior reliever Taylor Perry saw just 0.1 innings on the mound while striking out one and allowing one run.
