#8 Missouri Tops Evansville in Doubleheader

COLUMBIA, Mo. –
The University of Evansville softball team dropped to #8 Missouri in a doubleheader in Columbia, Mo. The Aces were defeated, 3-1, in the first game before suffering a close one, 4-3, in the second.
 
Senior Halie Malone and junior Kacey Rogers led UE at the plate today, both going 2-for-5 at bat and averaging a .400. Malone also tallied a double and one RBI on the day as Rogers went 1-for-1 in stolen bases. Freshman Kirsten O’Conner and sophomore Kayla Fortner also provided power at the plate as they both averaged a .667 slugging percentage while combining for two RBI’s, one double, and one home run.
 
The Aces will be back in action this weekend as they open conference play against Creighton at home in a doubleheader beginning on Saturday, March 16, at 12:00 p.m. CST.
 
Game 1: Missouri 3, UE 1
Missouri wasted no time in the bottom of the first inning as a sacrifice fly out to left field kicked off a 1-0 lead over the Aces.
 
The Tigers continued to expand their lead in the third with a double and a homer to left field that brought in a two run score, making it 3-0 game with Missouri still on top.
 
The Aces were able to score a single run off a homer to left field by Fortner, but fell short as the Tigers took a 3-1 victory.
 
Missouri pitcher ChelseaThomas, now 5-1 on the season, took the win for the Tigers as she pitched a complete 7.0 innings while striking out 10 and allowing just one run.
 
Evansville pitcher Sarah Patterson took the loss for the Aces as she pitched 6.0 innings while striking out four and allowing three runs. Patterson is now 4-4 on the season.
 
Game 2: Missouri 4, Evansville 3
After a home run to left center, the Tigers once again struck first on the Aces as the score quickly went to 1-0 in the first.
 
The Aces answered right back with a run of their own in the top of the third frame with a single by senior Alicia Betancur that allowed Fortner to cross the plate and tie it up, 1-1.
 
With a double to left center by Malone, the Aces were able to take the lead, 2-1, over the Tigers in the top of the sixth. Another double by O’Conner allowed another runner to cross home plate and advance the score further, making it a 3-1 game.
 
Missouri fought right back in the bottom of the sixth frame with a pair of singles that allowed them to once again take the lead over the Aces, 4-3.
 
Evansville was unable to get anything going in the seventh with a ground out and a couple of strikeouts that left the Aces defeated by Missouri in a close, 4-3, second game.
 
Missouri pitcher Nicole Hudson, now 4-0 on the season, took the win for the Tigers as she pitched a complete 7.0 innings while striking out six and allowing three runs.
 
UE freshman pitcher Sarah Baldwin suffered the loss for the Aces as she struck out one and allowed three runs, making her 1-3 on the season. Junior Taylor Perry saw the start, pitching 4.0 innings while striking out three and allowing one run.
