Creighton Takes First, Aces Grab Second in Doubleheader

EVANSVILLE, Ind. –
Evansville softball spilt in its doubleheader against Creighton, falling in the first game, 2-0, before defeating the Bluejays, 5-2, in the second.
 
Senior Tamara Robey went 3-for-6 at the plate while notching a triple and swiping two stolen bases in two attempts. Senior Brianna Villanueva also went 3-for-6 at bat as she stole one base in her one attempt. The Aces’ offense tallied one double, one triple, three RBIs, five runs, and went 5-for-6 in stolen bases on the day.
 
The Aces, now 1-1 in conference play, will be back in action to wrap up their three-game series with Creighton on Saturday, March 16, beginning at noon.
 
Game 1: Creighton 2, UE 0
After a scoreless first four innings, Creighton hit back-to-back home runs in the top of the fifth frame, taking the lead over Evansville, 2-0.
 
Evansville tried to get something going in the bottom of the sixth frame as Robey hit a triple to right field, but fell short as Creighton delivered five strikeouts to end the game and take the victory, 2-0.
 
Creighton pitcher Becca Changstrom had a career high 13 strikeouts as she took the win for the Bluejays, going 10-4 on the season as she pitched a complete 7.0 innings.
 
UE pitcher Sarah Patterson suffered the loss as she pitched 7.0 innings, striking out nine and allowing two runs. Patterson is now 4-5 on the season.
 
Game 2: Creighton 2, UE 5
The Bluejays struck first in the top of the second inning from a reach on an error by Evansville as they took a 1-0 lead.
 
After a single to center field by senior Kendall Kautz, the Aces tied it up, 1-1, in the bottom of the third inning. Senior Alicia Betancur then doubled down the left field line, driving in two runs and putting Evansville up, 3-1, over Creighton.
 
Creighton got its second run in the game off a home run to center field as they closed the gap, 3-2, with the Aces still in the lead in the top of the sixth.
 
After an error by Creighton, the Aces were able to capitalize as they advanced the score, 5-2, over the Bluejays in the bottom of the sixth. After a pair of ground outs and a line out to third base, Creighton was unable to get anything going as Evansville took the 5-2 victory.
 
UE pitcher Taylor Perry took the win for the Aces as she struck out five in 7.0 innings and allowed just one run, making her 2-0 on the season.
 
Alexis Cantu, now 4-4, took the loss for the Bluejays as she tallied 6.0 innings in the circle while striking out four and allowing one run.
