Aces Softball Sweeps Bradley in Doubleheader

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Evansville softball team notched a pair of wins in today’s doubleheader against Bradley, defeating the Braves 6-5 in the first while capping off the day with as 8-3 victory in the second.
 
“Everyone all around did a great job today,” head coach Mark Redburn said. “Our hitters were patient and waited for the pitches to come to them. We had solid defense and got the full 21 outs like we should have. Our kids just stayed patient.”
 
Sophomore Victoria Dellorto had an impressive outing against the Braves as she was 5-for-7 with two doubles, three runs, four RBIs, and a walk. Kayla Fortner added to the offense with a 3-for-6 at bat with a run scored, one home run, two RBI’s, and a walk.
 
The Aces (15-23) averaged a .339 at the plate and notched a notable six doubles, one triple, one home run, 13 RBIs, six walks, and two stolen bases overall on the day while outscoring Bradley 14-8.
 
UE will be back in action Sunday, April 14, as they finish the three-game series with Bradley beginning at 12:00 p.m. CST.
 
Game 1: Bradley 5, UE 6
Evansville jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the second with an RBI double to right center by freshman Kirsten O'Conner, making it 1-0. With a pair of errors on the Braves that allowed O’Conner to tally a run and senior Halie Malone to advance to third, senior Brianna Villanueva notched an RBI single to left field that sent Malone to the plate and allowed the Aces push the lead further, 3-0.
 
Bradley answered right back in the top of the third after a bases loaded walk was issued by UE pitcher Sarah Patterson that put a run on the board for the Braves and made it a 3-1 game. Soon after, the Braves were able to capitalize on a yet another bases loaded situation after a grand slam home run added four more runs and allowed them to take the lead, 5-3, over UE.
 
After a scoreless fourth and fifth frames, seniors Alicia Betancur and Villanueva notched back-to-back doubles that allowed a run scored as the Aces started to gain ground on the Bradley in the bottom of the sixth, 5-4. With yet another double by Dellorto and a triple by senior Tamara Robey, Evansville notched a pair of runs and took the victory, 6-5, after a scoreless seventh inning for the Braves.
 
Patterson notched her fourth win in a row as she improved to 10-6 on the season. With a complete 7.0 innings of work in the circle, Patterson allowed four runs while striking out four.
 
Bradley pitcher Madeline Lynch-Crumrine suffered the loss as she moved to 12-9 on the season. Lynch-Crumrine allowed two runs and struck out two in 5.0 innings.
 
Game 2: Bradley 3, UE 8
The Braves took off early in the first after a double to right center and an RBI single to left center allowed them to gain the lead, 2-0.
 
UE’s Fortner notched a solo home run to center field in the bottom half of the first to tally a run on the board for the Aces as Bradley still maintained the lead, 2-1.
 
With scoreless second and third innings, an RBI single expanded the Braves’ lead, 3-1, over the Aces in the top of the fourth.
 
The bottom half of the fourth inning saw a bases loaded, one out situation for junior Kacey Rogers as she ripped one through the left side and sent a runner to home plate as the score moved to 3-2 with Bradley still on top. With the bases still loaded, the Aces were able to use an error by the shortstop as Robey advanced to first and Villanueva scored as she knotted the score, 3-3, with the bases still loaded once again.
 
While continuing in the bottom of the fourth, Dellorto was able to manufacture three more runs for Evansville as she doubled to center field and UE was able to take the lead, 6-3, over Bradley. With an RBI single by Fortner, the Aces expanded their lead even further as they ended the fourth with a 7-3 lead.
 
Evansville notched their last run after an RBI single by O’Conner capped off the inning and the victory for the Aces as they defeated Bradley, 8-3.
 
UE pitcher Annie Moore took the victory as she improved to 2-8 in the circle after completing 4.0 innings and striking out one. Freshman Sarah Baldwin came in a relief in the fifth as she left the Braves scoreless in 3.0 innings of work while striking out two.
 
Mackenzie Camp, now 8-9 in the circle, suffered the loss for Bradley as she allowed five runs and struck out seven in 3.1 innings. Lynch-Crumrine came in at relief as she saw 2.2 innings while allowing one run and walking two.
