UE Honors Student-Athletes For Community Service

4/17/2013 5:27:00 PM

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Community service is one of the most important parts of being a student-athlete at the University of Evansville.  At the softball game on April 17, the student-athletes with the top number of hours were honored for their service.

"I am very proud of what our student-athletes have accomplished in the community.  Their efforts contributed over 4,000 hours to over 120 charitable organizations," UE Athletics Director John Stanley said.  "Their work in the community, in the classroom and with their teams is what the University of Evansville experience is all about."

Over 120 organizations benefited from the volunteering of 236 student-athletes at the University of Evansville.  They combined to post over 4,000 hours of work with those organizations.

Topping the list was Danielle Langness, who posted 515.5 hours of service.  She assisted in 10 different organizations.  Her efforts helped the women’s soccer team garner an impressive 881 hours of service this year, tops among all UE teams.  They worked with 24 different organizations.  Led by head coach Krista McKendree, the Aces spent many hours working with a local Upward Soccer program while reading to students in local elementary schools.

"I am extremely pleased with the effort our team put forth in the community this year. We always have a good time interacting with the various organizations but this year was exceptionally enjoyable," McKendree said.  "Our girls as well as all the other sports and athletes understand the impact they can make by spending a little bit of time helping and interacting others. Things like this are what make Evansville is such a special place; we feel a connection to the entire community and that is reciprocated by them supporting our programs."

"Dani is someone who makes me think about how much more I can do. She is the most giving person I have ever met. Her upbringing has instilled the value of being involved in the local community and this is something she has carried with her to this day," McKendree continued.  "Dani is a complete individual who always has a positive impact on those around her; she has an exceptional understanding of the bigger picture in life. I could not be more proud to have an individual represent my program or to have had the honor of being around such a wonderful young lady for 4 years."

Evansville had a record-breaking season for community service as 236 student-athletes posted 4,042.5 hours of work.  The top 20 are listed below along with a list of organizations that they have helped.
