Evansville Softball Splits with Northern Iowa

EVANSVILLE, Ind. –
The University of Evansville softball team split in its doubleheader against Northern Iowa. The Panthers defeated UE, 4-3, in the first game before the Aces took game two with a 7-5 victory.
 
Evansville’s offense was led by sophomore Victoria Dellorto and senior Tamara Robey as each went 2-for-6 at the plate while combining for two runs, one RBI, and four stolen bases on the day. Senior Brianna Villanueva went a perfect 1-for-1 as she notched one run, one RBI, and one walk. The Aces combined for a total of 10 hits, 10 runs, two home runs, nine RBIs, 12 walks, and went 9-for-10 in stolen bases.
 
UE will be back at Cooper Stadium tomorrow, April 7, to cap off the weekend with a single game against Northern Iowa beginning at 12:00 p.m. CST.
 
Game 1: Northern Iowa 4, UE 3
Evansville got something going early in the first with a throwing error by Northern Iowa and an RBI single up the middle by senior Halie Malone that gave the Aces an early 2-0 lead.
 
The Panthers tied it up in the top of the third inning after a home run to center field tallied a 2-2 score.
 
UNI was able to take the lead in the fourth frame after a walk was issued and the Panthers made it a 3-2 game. The top of the sixth allowed Northern Iowa to expand its lead, 4-2, after a ground out to third base allowed a runner to advance to home plate.
 
After a scoreless two innings for the Aces, a solo home run by sophomore Kayla Fortner notched another run on the board, making it a 4-3 game in the bottom of the seventh inning. With a fly out to center field and a strikeout, the Aces fell short as they left a runner stranded and UNI took the victory, 4-3.
 
UNI pitcher Jamie Fisher took the win as she improved to 11-10 on the season. Fisher struck out 11 in 7.0 innings of work and allowed one run.
 
Freshman pitcher Annie Moore took the loss as she moved to 1-7 on the season while tossing 3.1 innings and allowing three runs. Sarah Baldwin saw 3.2 innings in the circle as she struck out five and allowed one run.
 
Game 2: Northern Iowa 5, UE 7
After a scoreless first three innings, Northern Iowa made it a 1-0 game in the fourth as an RBI single allowed the Panthers to take the lead. With a home run to left center, UNI was able to expand its lead, 3-0.
 
As Evansville entered the sixth with no hits or runs and one error, the Aces rallied as a reach on a fielding error and a grand slam home run by senior Kendall Kautz allowed UE to take the lead, 5-3, over Northern Iowa.
 
With a pair of singles by Villanueva and Robey, the Aces were able to tack on two more runs as they expanded their lead even more to 7-3.
 
UNI was able to score a pair of runs in the top of the seventh after two singles, but came up short as Evansville took the win, 7-5.
 
UE pitcher Sarah Patterson grabbed the win as she improved to 7-6 overall in the circle. With 7.0 innings of work, Patterson struck out four and allowed five runs.
 
Northern Iowa pitcher Abbie VanVleet suffered the loss as she moved to 1-5 on the season. VanVleet pitched 4.2 innings for the Panthers as she struck out one and issued four walks.
