HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – In a strong outing by both teams, the University of Evansville cross country teams finished up their respective races at the Fleet Foot Invitational on Saturday morning.
"Both teams had strong runs today, we had two men in the top eight and four women finish in the top twelve," head coach Don Walters said. "Kelby ran an outstanding race, she knew what everyone else in the race was doing and took it over from the start."
"Kirsten (Perrey) and Maria (Lynn) set PR's again. Kirsten is feeling and training well and overall, everyone has improved," Walters said. "I am proud of our men, with the freshman we have running just their second 8K, their work has been strong and they will continue to see improvement."
Kelby Jenkins ran the top 5K time of her career, winning the race with a time of 17:35. It was also the #2 time in Evansville history, just five seconds off of Andrea Sonnenschein's all-time mark. The win was her second of the season while she has finished in the top two in all three races thus far. Her efforts came in a race that featured 87 runners.
Finishing behind Jenkins was a pair of Aces who set PR's for the second week in a row. Kirsten Perrey finished in seventh place with a time of 19:01.3. That is 31 seconds better than her top effort last week. Maria Lynn followed up last weekend's 19:16.77 effort (a PR at that time) with another personal best, running a 19:13.6 to take 11
th overall.
Laurel Wolfe finished in 12
th place with a time of 19:14.6 while Jacqueline Carlson (20:04.1) took 20
th. Alyssa Moran recorded a 27
th with a 20:16.9 and was followed by Elizabeth Kingshott, who ran her first race of the season. The sophomore was 28
th with a 20:20.5.
Josh Genet paced the men's team to a win in the Division I bracket. He took third place overall with a 25:57.1. His finish came out of 80 runners. Jon Ashby also finished in the top ten, running a 26:37.1 to finish in eighth place. Freshman Ben Woolems continued to improve each week, running his best 8K time as his 27:15.0 placed him 17
th.
Another frosh, Ross Frondorf, set his best mark with a 27:28.1 to place 20
th. He was followed by Andrew Barrett (28
th-27:59.9) and Kyle Wilson (35
th-28:41.7)
On Friday, the squads will take part in the Indiana Intercollegiate before taking their first off weekend of the season.
