EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Evansville sophomore
Mark Anthony Gonzalez received a pair of weekly accolades after his performance in the Purple Aces' victories over Saint Louis and Georgia State. Gonzalez was named the Missouri Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Week and was also named to the CollegeSoccerNews.com National Team of the Week.
Â
Gonzalez led Evansville offensively with three goals this week, including a pair of game-winners. In Wednesday night's win over the nationally-ranked Billikens, the Toronto, Ontario native scored the game-winning goal with just 34 seconds left in the second overtime period by finishing a cross to the back post from fellow sophomore
Nate Opperman.
Â
Gonzalez completed the week by scoring two more goals in UE's 3-1 victory over Georgia State Saturday night. After the Panthers took an early lead, Gonzalez tied the match with a goal in the 18th minute, before scoring the game-winner exactly three minutes later.
Â
Evansville will return to action this weekend at Arad McCutchan Stadium, when it hosts the annual ProRehab Aces Soccer Classic. The Aces will play NJIT Friday night at 7:30 p.m., before wrapping up the two-day event with a 2:30 p.m. contest Sunday against Eastern Illinois.
