EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Evansville women's basketball team starts the 2014-15 regular season on Sunday, November 16 when they play the Austin Peay Lady Govs. The tip will be at 1 p.m. at the Ford Center in Evansville, Indiana.
With a victory, the Aces will have won three straight season-opening games including a 81-46 victory over Eastern Illinois in 2013 and a 54-45 win at Ball State in 2012.
Evansville lost their lone exhibition game of the season, 76-72, against cross-town rival, Southern Indiana on Saturday, November 8. Sophomore guard
Sara Dickey scored a game-high 31 points for UE at the Ford Center. Senior forward
Mallory Ladd also reached double figures with 16 points and collecting 6 rebounds. The Aces also got six points each from senior guard
Khristian Hart, freshman guard
Kenyia Johnson and sophomore forward
Sasha Robinson.
Evansville has six returning players from last season, including four starters. In 2013-14, the Aces went 15-16 overall and 10-8 in the Missouri Valley Conference. UE ended the season fourth in the MVC Standings and advanced to a postseason tournament for the first time since 2008-2009. The Aces earned a berth in the Women's Basketball Invitational, but lost at Eastern Michigan in the opening round.
Evansville was projected to finish fourth in the MVC preseason poll, their highest projection since 2008-2009. Sophomore guard Sara Dickey was also named to the preseason All-Conference team.
UE is guided by head coach
Oties Epps. In his four years with the program, Epps has piloted Evansville to an increased win total in every season.
Austin Peay was 9-20 last season and finished 6-10 in the Ohio Valley Conference, sixth best in the West Division. The Lady Govs return its five leading scorers from a season ago including junior guard Tiasha Gray (15.1 points per game) and senior guard Kristen Stainback (12.0 ppg). Austin Peay also brings back its top five rebounds with junior forward Jennifer Nwokocha (6.2 rebounds per game) and sophomore center Tearra Banks (6.1) controlling the glass. The Lady Govs are led by nine year head coach Carrie Daniels who has amassed a 88-157 career mark.
Austin Peay has the edge in the all-time series 10-6 against Evansville. The Purple Aces won last year's meeting against the Lady Govs 65-50 on November 23 in Clarksville, Tennessee. Dickey scored a game-high 19 points for Evansville as Ladd recorded a double-double with 17points and 10 rebounds.
