UE Swimming/Diving Finishes Historic Opening Day

11/21/2014 9:00:00 PM

INDIANAPOLIS – A school record fell on the women's side as the University of Evansville swimming and diving teams completed day one of the House of Champions in Indianapolis.

Despite finishing second in their 400 medley relay, the group of Michaela Kent, Mackenzie Powell, Sam Montgomery and Michelle Tipton set the school record with their time of 3:49.38.  It was just over a second off of IUPUI's winning pace.

Overall, the women's team stands in second place in the standings while the men are fifth with two days of action remaining.

Aside from UE's school record, the women set a pair of meet records on Friday.  Danielle Freeman set the mark in the 50 free with her time of 23.31.  It was just a tad faster than Green Bay's record of 23.39 from last season.  In the 200 free relay finals, Abby Smith, Montgomery, Freeman and Tipton took top honors with a 1:33.55.  That smashed the former mark of 1:34.87, which Ashland set in 2009.

In the 500 free prelims, Tipton set the bar high with a top finish.  Her time was 5:00.02.  Smith also finished a successful day.  Her 23.63 put her third in the 50 free.

Pacing the men on day one was Troy Burger.  He swam a solid 1:55.22 en route to a 6th in the 200 IM prelims before taking 8th with a 1:57.07 in the finals.

Just a third of the meet is completed with competition resuming on Saturday morning.  Live results can be followed here: http://www.iunat.iupui.edu/content/Other-Information/LiveResults/index.htm.
