EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Just a week after opening up the home slate, the Purple Aces women's tennis team takes to the road once again for a pair as they head south to Austin Peay on Friday before making a quick trek to Indianapolis to take on IUPUI Sunday.
Friday's action starts at 4 p.m. while the Sunday match at IUPUI commences at 10 a.m. ET.
In its home opener against UT Martin last weekend, the Aces picked up their first victory of the season. Doubles saw the Purple Aces sweep past the Skyhawks as all three teams picked up the win.
Kelsey Costales and
Natasha James took down Sarah Candeloro and Katie McCall by an 8-6 final. In the second group,
Marina Moreno and
Andjela Brguljan defeated Ivon Simic and Naito Hitomi, 8-6.
Evansville completed the doubles sweep as
Marketa Trousilova and
Mina Milovic topped Burcu Tari and Jessica Silva by an 8-5 final. Three girls took singles wins as UE earned its first win of 2014. Trousilova got the job done in the second flight, making quick work of Naito. She won in two sets, 6-1, 6-2.
Brguljan registered the first perfect night in her time with the Aces, taking a win in flight five, getting past Silva in dominant fashion, 6-0, 6-3. Milovic was victorious in the sixth spot, getting past McCall, 6-2, 6-0.
Austin Peay checks in at 2-5 on the season. After a tough 0-5 start, the Governors rebounded to defeat Western Kentucky by a 4-3 margin before taking down USI last Saturday with a 9-0 shutout.
Andra Cornea has been Austin Peay's top performer this season. Coupled with the fall season, Cornea has posted an 8-7 mark in singles with all of her spring action coming in the top flight. In dual play, Cornea has teamed with Ornella Di Salvo to post a 4-3 mark in top flight doubles.
IUPUI begins the weekend with an 0-9 mark. The Jaguars have played a challenging schedule that has included Notre Dame, Cincinnati and Xavier. Their weekend starts with a road match at Dayton on Saturday.
Despite a 1-8 start to dual play, Bobbi Modesto had a strong fall season that saw her with six out of ten matches. She has seen time at the top four flights since the spring campaign began.
