The Aces in England: Day 5

3/13/2014 12:34:00 PM

Yesterday we woke up bright and early because we had a lot of traveling throughout the day. We started off traveling to Harlaxton and had a tour of the grounds. This was exciting for the team because the majority of us won't have an opportunity to attend Harlaxton for a semester. I was intrigued by the several different secret doors in all of the rooms. If we had more than an hour or two I definitely would've liked to explore a little more. Another highlight of the visit was seeing friends who are attending Harlaxton this semester. It's always nice seeing a familiar face or two while being in England. At the end of the visit we walked a mile to the edge of the grounds for lunch at the local pub. The pub brought back memories for Coach Ray who studied at Harlaxton in the spring of 1998.

After lunch it was time to head to Loughborough University where we played our second game of the week. Loughborough is one of the top universities in England so it was a good test for us. In the end we tied 1-1 and felt we could have done better. Ultimately though, it was more lessons learned and another chance to gain experience playing together. After the game we headed back to Cobham where we will be staying the rest of the week. It was another early night for everyone to recover from the game. Today we play our third and final game of the week.

Cheers,
Kevin Schafer

Today was one of the highlighted days of our tour, as we spent the morning in Grantham as we visited Harlaxton College.

Harlaxton is the British campus of the University of Evansville, and is one of the Crown Jewels of our institution. The international experience is a critical piece of the mission of UE, and it was special to be able to share Harlaxton with our players.

Two of the members of our team have studied at Harlaxton - Eric Teppen attended Harlaxton last summer, and Associate Head Coach Marshall Ray attended as a student in 1998. Of the eight classes that our staff has recruited to UE, six of them have been able to visit Harlaxton on a tour like this.

Upon our arrival to Harlaxton, we were greeted by staff and given a tour of the grounds and the manor. It is a majestic facility, and is something that every UE student should experience. The University of Evansville is one of the nation's leaders in study abroad, and after spending the morning here with our team, it's easy to see why.

After having a pre-game meal down the street from the manor at the Gregory Arms, we headed over to Loughborough University for the second match of our tour.

Yours in soccer,
