UE Softball to Host Aces Invitational

Evansville will host three teams in home tournament

EVANSVILLE, IN – The University of Evansville softball team is set to host the Aces Invitational on Sunday March 9th and Monday March 10th. The tournament will take place at Cooper Stadium and will feature UE, IPFW, Murray State and South Dakota State.

Sunday
03.09 – IPFW vs UE – 10:30 a.m.
03.09 – South Dakota State vs UE – 12:30 p.m.
03.09 – IPFW vs Murray State – 2:30 p.m.
03.09 – South Dakota State vs Murray State – 4:30 p.m.
 
Monday
03.10 – South Dakota State vs Murray State – 10:30 a.m.
03.10 – South Dakota State vs UE – 12:30 p.m.
03.10 – IPFW vs Murray State – 2:30 p.m.
03.10 – IPFW vs UE – 4:30 p.m.
 
The Purple Aces will look to continue their recent success, after winning five in a row, including two last weekend during the Evansville Invitational.
 
Leading UE in the circle and at the plate are juniors Megan Gurski and
Kayla Fortner. Gurski leads the Aces with three wins, 32 strikeouts and an ERA of 3.46 in 26.1 innings, while Fortner has a homerun, has been walked six times and four doubles this season.
 
Scouting the Opponents:
 
IPFW Mastodons (13-5, 0-0 Summit League)
The Mastodons are also on a five game winning streak, having beaten Marist, North Carolina Central (twice) and Mercer (twice). Leading IPFW behind the plate is junior catcher Dani Pugh. Pugh is third on the team with a .345 batting average, but leads the team with four homeruns and 27 RBI. In the circle is junior Miranda Kramer who has an ERA of 1.31 and a 7-3 record. The junior also has 104 strikeouts in 64.1 innings.
 
Murray State Racers (8-7, 0-0 OVC)
Murray State is 2-3 in their last five games, but has played some very stiff competition. Murray has beaten Loyola and Kansas but has lost to Lipscomb, Miami (Ohio) and Kansas. The Racers will rely on junior Alexa Baker who has a batting average of .362 to go along with four homeruns and 11 RBI. CheyAnne Gaskey has pitched 40.0 innings with 37 strikeouts this season.
 
South Dakota State Jackrabbits (5-8, 0-0 Summit League)
The Jackrabbits are coming off of a four game winning streak, having competed in the Arkansas Invitational two weekends ago. SDSU was supposed to compete in the Evansville Invitational last weekend, but due to weather, was unable to attend. Elyse Eitel has been South Dakota State's best offensive threat this season, she has a batting average of .350, two homeruns and four RBI. In the circle is Ashlyn Bender who has pitched 35.0 innings, striking out 22 along the way.
 
The Purple Aces will start the tournament against IPFW at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday. Make sure to come out to Cooper Stadium and support your UE softball team as they look to continue their winning streak.
