Softball to host UT Martin in Doubleheader at Cooper Stadium

Aces to host Skyhawks in a mid-week doubleheader

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Evansville softball team is set to host the UT Martin Skyhawks in a mid-week doubleheader at Cooper Stadium on Wednesday, April 2 starting at 3:00 p.m.
 
Evansville (14-14, 2-6 MVC) will enter the doubleheader coming off of a 1-2 weekend conference series against Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
 
UT Martin comes in with a 15-16-1 overall record, with a 5-3 Ohio Valley Conference record. The Skyhawks went 1-1 against SIUE last weekend.
 
The Purple Aces come in behind Megan Gurski and Kayla Fortner. Gurski leads the team with a .387 batting average, starting all 28 games for Evansville. The junior has three doubles, a triple, six homeruns and 22 RBI this season to go along with a .634 slugging percentage. Fellow junior Kayla Fortner is third on the team with a .293 batting average, 18 RBI, seven homers and six stolen bases.
 
Gurski also leads the Aces in the circle. The junior has a 2.99 ERA and a 6-7 record in 77.1 innings of work. Gurski has registered 75 strikeouts and five complete games during her first season for UE.
 
UT Martin brings in a strong offense, headlined by Lauren Smith. Smith has a .260 batting average, has started 31 games for the Skyhawks, five homeruns, 18 RBI, two doubles and scored 12 runs. Behind Smith, is junior Kenzi Tate. Tate has four bombs, 13 RBI and five doubles to go along with a .273 batting average.
 
Leading the way for the Skyhawks in the circle is Elizabeth Wiegand. Wiegand has a 9-4 record in 93.1 innings of work, striking out 53 and 10 complete games to go along with a 3.07 ERA.
 
After hosting the mid-week doubleheader, the Purple Aces will host Missouri Valley Conference division rival Wichita State in a weekend series at Cooper Stadium on April 5-6.
