EVANSVILLE, Ind. – It is back to the road for the University of Evansville women's tennis team as they travel to Wichita, Kan. to take on Wichita State in a 6:30 p.m. match on Saturday.
Evansville puts a 2-match winning streak on the line on Sunday, including a 5-2 win over UNI and a 9-0 shutout at USI on Wednesday. Doubles play has been a great strength for the Purple Aces as they have taken the last four doubles tilts, winning 10 out of 12 decisions.
Helping in the recent stretch have been the top two duos of
Kelsey Costales/
Natasha James and the No. 2 tandem of
Marina Moreno and
Marketa Trousilova. James and Costales have posted five victories in a row while Moreno and Trousilova are winners of their last four.
In singles, Trousilova has been stellar, winning eight of her last nine matches in the top flight. James has settled well in the second flight, winning five out of six.
Andjela Brguljan has gained confidence as the season has moved along. The freshman began her collegiate career at 2-8 in singles, but has rebounded to win five of her last seven.
Wichita State is 13-6 overall and has won both conference outings thus far. The Shockers earned a pair of road victories last weekend, taking down Illinois State and Bradley just hours apart. After dealing the Redbirds a 6-1 defeat in Normal, WSU made the quick trek to Peoria where they shut out the Braves by a 7-0 final.
Julia Schiller and Rebecca Pedrazzi have been the Shockers' top players this spring. Schiller is 12-5 on the spring, including 10-4 at No. 1 singles. Pedrazzi also has 12 victories with 10 of those coming in the second flight.
The No. 2 doubles team of Pedrazza and Montse Fernandez have been strong in 2014. They have been victorious in 12 out of 15 tries.
