The bottom of the Evansville (22-12, 4-2 MVC) lineup provided most of the offense for the Aces in the loss, as nine-hold hitter
Jarod Perry finished the day 2-for-2 with a run scored, while sophomore
Shain Showers drove in two of UE's runs with a two-run, pinch hit home run in the bottom of the seventh.
Fellow sophomore
Connor Strain (2-3) suffered the loss on the mound, after allowing three runs on five hits in 4.1 innings. Strain finished the day with a pair of strikeouts around two walks.
After three scoreless innings, Wichita State (17-18, 3-6 MVC) got on the board in the top of the fourth, when Micah Green doubled down the left field line to drive home Tyler Baker to give the Shockers a 1-0 lead.
WSU broke the game open in the top of the fifth, when it rallied for seven runs to open up an 8-0 advantage. Dayne Parker started the rally with a one-out, RBI single to left, before Garrett Bayliff plated a pair with a double to left center. Cody Bobbit tallied the fourth RBI of the inning by drawing a bases-loaded walk, before Tanner Kirk put a cap on the frame with a bases-clearing double down the line in left to score Chase Simpson, Green and Bobbit.
Evansville grabbed a bit of momentum in the bottom of the seventh, when sophomore
Eric McKibban led off the inning with a single through the right side and Showers followed with his two-run blasted to left to chase Wichita State starter Sam Tewes (5-2). Later in the inning, senior
Jake Mahon delivered a two-out, RBI double to cut the Shockers' lead to 8-3 after seven complete frames.
However, WSU would put the game away with a five-run eight that was highlighted by a grand slam off the bat of Simpson, making the final score 13-3, after UE failed to score in the bottom half of the inning.
Evansville will be back on the diamond Tuesday, April 15, when it travels to Murray State for a midweek non-conference game beginning at 3 p.m.
