EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Former University of Evansville men's soccer great David Weir, who is now an assistant manager for Brentford F.C., has helped guide the club to the Football League Championship, the second-highest division in the English football league system and a step below the Premier League.

After narrowly missing promotion a year ago, Brentford defeated Preston North End, 1-0, Friday to earn promotion to the Championship.  Alan Judge scored the lone goal of the match on a penalty kick in the 30th minute and the Bees are currently second in the League 1 table, 10 points back of league-leading Wolverhampton.

As a player at UE, Weir was named the Midwestern Collegiate Conference Player of the Year and an All-American in 1990 and was inducted in the UE Athletics Hall of Fame in 1998.  Weir is tied for the school record with 50 career goals and ranks second in school history with 129 career points.

His international playing career included a stint with Everton of the Premier League from 1998-2007 and 69 appearances for the Scotland national team.
