NASHVILLE, Tenn. – With just four days of practice under their belts, the Purple Aces men's cross country team had a solid day at the Belmont Opener at Percy Warner Park.
The Aces faced top competition in the 5K race, which took place in conditions over 90 degrees on Friday afternoon. Leading the way for UE was Josh Genet. Evansville's top finisher in each event last season picked up right where he left off last season, running a 16:45.35 to finish in 52
nd out of a total of 113 participants. It was the first 5K event at UE for all runners.
Coming in just five spots behind Genet was Matt Hamilton. Limited last season due to injury, Hamilton was Evansville's second-best finisher, posting a 16:59.33 to take 57
th. Sophomore Benjamin Woolems was third for Evansville. He finished with a time of 17:36.18.
Four UE runners took spots 75-78 with Matthew Spencer leading the way with an 18:30.23. Ross Frondorf, James Paul and John Rodrick followed. Isaiah Frey took 79
th while Benjamin Johnson and Billy McNicholas rounded out the UE contingent.
Taking top honors in the race was Shadrack Matelong of Middle Tennessee State. He beat his nearest competition by just under nine seconds with his time of 15:02.19. Matt McClintock of Purdue was second with a 15:11.13. He beat another MTSU runner – Amos Cheruiyot – to the stripe by less than a second. David Mokone of Western Kentucky and Evan Stifel from Belmont rounded out the top five.
Top team honors went to Purdue, who finished with an impressive 25 points. The Boilermakers had six of the top 12 finishers in the event. Belmont came in second with 52 points while Western Kentucky was third with 73. Evansville took seventh place out of nine Division I squads.
Next up for the Aces is their yearly trip up to Charleston, Ill. for the Eastern Illinois Invitational. UE is set to run next Friday beginning at 5:30 p.m.
