EVANSVILLE, Ind. – In a hard-fought battle for both the men and women, the University of Evansville swimming and diving teams swept past Eastern Illinois in a meet at Wyttenbach Pool on Saturday afternoon.

"It was nice to win. Both teams did a great job today and it was a close meet at the first break, but they really focused and pulled away in the second half of the meet," head coach Rickey Perkins said.  "We had a lot of season best times this weekend and we are on our way to hopefully a great finish by the end of the season."

Evansville's women finished with a 164-114 win while the men held strong with a 188-99 winning decision over the Panthers.

In the 200 yard medley relay events, both the men and women picked up victories. Michaela Kent, Amy Smith, Charlotte Lechner and Mackenzie Harris swam a 1:51.04 to defeat EIU by 1.38 seconds. The men's team featured Ethan O'Rourke, Troy Burger, Matt Duke and Matt Childress, who had an even bigger winning margin, swimming a 1:35.50 to win by 2.31 seconds. O'Rourke struck again in the 100 back as his 52.16 was good for the top spot. In the 200 back, O'Rourke was stellar as a dominating time of 1:56.76 led the way by over 8 seconds.

In the women's race, Taylor Davidson was the winner, registering a 1:01.50 to win by over two seconds. Davidson also recorded a win in the 200 back race as her 2:13.24 was 2.54 seconds ahead of the field.Â

Maja Magnusson was the top performer in the 1000 free. She won by 19.34 seconds with her time of 11:03.10. Andrew Cotton and David Studdard swept the top spots for the men with finals of 10:20.93 and 10:21.43, respectively. Madi Jones was the top performer in the 200 free, dominating the field with her 1:59.47. She won by nearly five seconds. Magnusson also earned the win in the 500 free. Her 5:25.76 in the distance was 6.94 seconds better than EIU.Â

Dan O'Brien paced the men in the event, edging out teammate Jared Sutphin. O'Brien swam a 1:47.56. He picked up another win in the in the 100 free, totaling a time of 47.98. Sutphin was able to pick up the victory in the 500 free, winning by almost two seconds thanks to a finish of 4:58.82. Matt Duke was victorious in the 50 free, edging out Childress by just .05 seconds. Duke finished in 22.13.

UE earned another sweep in the 200 breaststroke event. Amy Smith (2:31.96) was the top female while Troy Burger (2:12.79) was the leading swimmer for the men. In the 100 fly, Jones led the ladies with her effort of 1:00.91 while O'Brien paced the guys in 52.25. Burger also was victorious in the 200 IM, posting a 2:02.94.

Both 200 free relays also went Evansville's way. The group of Duke, Everett Plocek, O'Rourke and Childress swam a 1:26.70 to top fellow teammates O'Brien, Skyler Shinn, Sutphin and Cameron Wickes. For the women, Jones, Magnusson, Harris and Kent led the way with a 1:40.10, taking the win by a half second.

In the dives, it was Courtney Coverdale and Miguel Marcano picking up the victories. Coverdale recorded a 278.40 in the 1-meter and followed that up with a 283.72 in the 3. Marcono was credited with a 242.62 in the 1-meter dive while his 3-meter score checked in at a 252.82.

Up next for the women is a home meet against Arkansas Little Rock on Nov. 7. After that, both squads travel to Indianapolis for the House of Champions from Nov. 20-22. That will be the next meet for the guys.
