Women’s Basketball Falls to UT Martin

12/12/2015 3:48:00 PM

Box Score EVANSVILLE – Both Sara Dickey and Ashley Hawkins hit double figures in points for the University of Evansville women's basketball team on Saturday, but UT Martin's three-point accuracy proved the difference for the Skyhawks as the Purple Aces fell 75-48 at the Ford Center.

Hawkins, a native of Sacramento, Calif., was the go-to player in the post for UE (1-8), tallying 10 points on 4-for-8 shooting, and she'd also tie her career-best mark in rebounds with eight. The junior forward was one of the primary reasons that the Aces were able to out-rebound the visitors 39-37 in the game, and she'd help the team out-score UTM 18-16 in the paint.

Dickey, who racked up double-digit points for the third consecutive game, found her rhythm from distance in the second half, finishing the day with three treys and 13 points.

"If you look at the big picture, we executed well at times and were able to get some tremendous shots, but the ball just isn't going in for us," UE head coach Oties Epps said. "As a coaching staff, we just have to keep encouraging and showing belief in the team. We'll continue to work on getting those kinds of shots because it's just a matter of time before they start falling."

"We'll be OK," Epps continued. "We just need to put that one full game together, and I think it will start to snowball. We're practicing well and doing a lot of good things in the build-up to the game, and now we just have to bring it to the competition."

The Skyhawks (5-4) saw six players reach double figures, thanks in large part to 14 three-pointers. UTM was led in the contest by Katie Schubert and Jessy Ward, who scored 14 points apiece.

The three-point display from UTM was most effective in the opening quarter as a pair of treys from Shubert and Haley Howard quelled a late UE run to put the Skyhawks up 23-13 heading into the second stanza. It would be Myah Taylor who played the role of villain in the second quarter as she brought an end to a 7-0 Aces run with a three in the dying moments of the half to send UE into the locker room down 13 at 39-26.

The Skyhawks would ride the momentum into the second half, outscoring UE 36-22 over the game's final 20 minutes.

The Aces, who were playing in only their second home game this season, will return to action on Dec. 21 at the Ford Center as Ball State will make the trek to Evansville. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m.

NOTES: UE is now 7-7 all-time versus UT Martin, and the series dates back to the 1985-86 season … The Aces and Skyhawks have met in five consecutive seasons … UE is 18-14 all-time against opponents that hail from the state of Tennessee, and that mark improves to 13-8 when the games are played in Evansville … Sara Dickey, who ranks ninth all-time on UE's all-time scoring list, now has 1,285 points for her career. She has racked up 10 or more points in all but two contests this season.
