UE hangs tough but Drake pulls away late in Aces road loss

DES MOINES, Iowa –
Three University of Evansville women's basketball players scored in double figures in a 78-69 road loss at Drake on Friday night.
 
Evansville (11-14, 6-8) was led offensively by guard Sara Dickey who netted 27 points. Guard Khristian Hart also added 12 points as forward Mallory Ladd chipped in with 11.
 
The Aces trailed by three at the beginning of the game but responded with an 8-0 run including five from Dickey. After Drake evened up the score, a layup from guard Kat Taylor and another jumper by Dickey moved UE ahead 12-8 with 15:02 to play in the opening half. The Bulldogs tied the game again at 12 only to see UE pull ahead by six, the Aces' largest lead of the game. Dickey tallied nine early on as Evansville leapt ahead 21-15. Yet again, Drake pulled even with UE at 23 and went ahead 36-31 entering halftime. Both teams shot an identical 13-for-34 in the opening stanza for a 38.2% clip. Dickey led all scorers at the half with 14 points. Hart also had eight points at the break.
 
The Aces fell behind by eight in the early stages of the second half but a Dickey jumper completed a 7-2 run and brought UE within a point, 47-46. The game was then tied at 51 and 53 before Drake went on a 13-2 run. Down 66-55, UE surged back with the next seven consecutive points to trail by four. Drake then outscored the Aces 13-9 over the final 3:26 to claim the nine point win.
 
Four Bulldogs scored double figures in the victory. Drake forward Lizzy Wendell scored a team-high 24 points. Guard Maddy Dean (23 points, 10 rebounds) and center Becca Jonas (13 points, 17 rebounds) both posted double-doubles. Guard Paige Greiner tied a career-high with 12 points off the bench. Drake outrebounded UE 50-33 in the game.
 
Dickey has now scored 20+ points in six of her last seven games played. Her 487 points this season rank sixth most in single-season program history. The sophomore's 1034 career points are now 17th most in UE women's basketball history.
 
In addition to 12 points, Hart grabbed seven rebounds (five offensive) which was one shy of her career high (vs. UNI 1/22). She also tallied four steals and three assists. Ladd had six rebounds, five assists and two steals as well.
 
UE tied a season-high with 10 made three-point field goals (vs. Troy 12/18/14).
 
Aces continue their weekend roadtrip at Northern Iowa on Sunday, Feb. 22 at 2:00 p.m. Due to the men's basketball team playing at the same time, the women's basketball game will air on tape delay on Monday, Feb. 23 at 10:00 a.m. on WUEV 91.5 FM.
 
Evansville is back at home on Friday, Feb. 27 to host the Indiana State Sycamores. The tip is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Ford Center in Evansville, Ind.
