Evansville, IN – The University of Evansville Women's Softball Team (7-24, 1-5 MVC) will finally see their first home action of the season when take on conference foe Illinois State for a three game set at Cooper Stadium. Last weekend when the Aces were in Des Moines, IA to take on the Drake Bulldogs, the weekend marked the seventh weekend in a row that the Aces had been on the road.
"It's exciting to be home. It's different for us. Being on the road we had a set routine so it will be a little bit different but I know the girls are excited to be able to sleep in their own bed and have some more fans at the games" said Coach Mundell
The Aces are coming off a tough series last weekend against Drake. The Aces dropped all three games. Evansville showed a lot of life in game one when they put up five runs to Drakes six but couldn't come through in the end to grab the victory. Mariah Ferguson was a bright spot for the Aces on the weekend going 3-7 for an average of .429. Ferguson homered twice on the weekend, had three RBIs, and scored three runs. Ferguson also walked twice and accumulated nine total bases.
Danielle Freeman currently leads the Aces with a batting average of .382. Freeman has five home runs and 11 RBIs. Ferguson has been heating up lately at the plate currently leads the Aces with 19 RBIs. Amanda Blankenship continues to take on a majority of the innings for the Aces on the mound. Blankenship has thrown 129.2 innings this season. She has recorded five of the seven wins for the Aces and has recorded 80 strikeouts.
"Ferguson is having a tremendous year as a senior. She really worked hard all fall. She's done tremendous at the plate. We have a lot of girls swinging the bat well at the plate" said Mundell
Mundell added "Offensively I am happy where our club is at. Defensively there are some things we need to work on."
Illinois State comes in with an overall record of 13-18. In conference play the Redbirds currently boast a record of 4-2. The Redbirds are coming off a series against Northern Iowa where they took two out of three games. They then went to Indiana State where they also took two out of three games against the Sycamores. Most recently Illinois State is coming off of a 3-6 loss against Northern Illinois. Regan Romshek leads the Redbirds with a batting average of .356. Romshek currently has eight home runs and 23 RBIs.
After this weekend the Aces will be back on the road when they take on Missouri State next weekend. The Aces next home action after this weekend will be on April 14
th when they will have a double header against Southern Illinois.
