GWANGJU, South Korea – Egidijus Mockevicius capped off the Purple Aces' CIT Championship run with a career-high 27 points in the win over Northern Arizona. He is looking to improve on those numbers in his senior season and is busy preparing himself to do so by playing for his native Lithuania in the World University Games.
Through five games in the tournament, which is being played in South Korea, Mockevicius has helped his team to a 4-1 mark. He has been one of the top players on the team, averaging 11.0 points per game while continuing to be an accurate shooter, hitting 20 of his 34 attempts (60.5%). His rebounding has also been solid, checking in at over five per game.
His efforts have Lithuania in a good spot entering the quarterfinal round. They are 4-1 going into a game against the United States. Fans in the area can watch the game live on ESPNU, ESPN3.com or the WatchESPN app. It will begin at 10 p.m. CT on Friday evening.
Mockevicius began the tournament on Saturday, playing 14 minutes while scoring five points in a 96-89 loss to France. After the tough start, he started to find his groove, leading his country to wins in each of the last four games. That began on July 5 when his team squared off against Finland. Egidijus played a team-high 24:26 and scored 14 points on a 7-of-9 effort from the field. He also had four rebounds in an 87-70 victory.
Against Chinese Taipei, he had a solid day, scoring 10 points in just under 12 minutes of action in leading Lithuania to a dominating 93-37 win. In the fourth game, Mockevicius registered another 14-point effort against Japan. Lithuania won by a final of 90-76.
Lithuania improved to 4-1 earlier today by taking down Australia, 74-67. Mockevicius reached double figures once again, draining six shots to finish with 12 points. With the win, his squad will face off against the United States on Saturday in the quarterfinal round of the tournament. The USA, represented by the University of Kansas men's basketball team, enters the game undefeated.
Aces fans can tune in live on Friday evening. It will be televised live at 10 p.m. CT. Keep track of Egidijus and Lithuania as they continue their quest for a medal at Donkang College Gymnasium.
