Genesis Miranda and
Stephanie Cerino tallied the top two kill totals of 13 and 10, respectively, but it was Eastern Illinois who was able to register a 3-0 win over the University of Evansville volleyball team on Friday afternoon in the first game of the DePaul Invitational.

Miranda had one of her most accurate hitting efforts for UE (3-2), checking in at .286 with 13 kills. Cerino was also solid with a double-digit kill effort of her own to go along with .259 hitting. Â
Lorena Marquez posted 16 assists in the match while
Kim Deprez finished with 12 digs.

"We just had our first bad loss of the season, our energy was not where it needs to be," head coach Manolo Concepcion said. "It was the first time that our team looked as young as we are. It is time to regroup and come out stronger and more poised than we were today."

Evansville took off in the opening set, taking an early 4-2 lead. Eastern Illinois battled back and made its run. With the score knotted at 8-8, the Panthers reeled off the next five and would pull away for a 25-13 win.

It was the Aces who made an early run in the second frame, tallying the opening three points before EIU battled back to take its first lead at 5-4. Â
Gabriela Roman helped the Aces go back in front as her kill gave UE its 3-point edge back as they went up 10-7. Just as fast, the Panthers scored the next nine points to go up 16-10 and would finish the set with a 25-14 triumph.

EIU set the tone early in the third as they notched the first five points. Evansville got as close as four points (8-4), but the Panthers had the upper hand as they clinched the match with a 25-17 win to move to 4-1 on the season.

Next up for the Purple Aces is a tilt against host DePaul. The two squads face off on Saturday at noon. UE wraps up the tournament at 4:30 p.m. tomorrow when they face the University of Toledo.
